neither, shoot 4:3 and add the bars after.

Squeeze, if you're going for a 16:9 DVD.

I'm glad this question was asked because I was about to post a similar one myself.

I haven't done my exhaustive search through the threads yet, so shoot me if this has been answered already, but what the hell is squeeze mode exactly? It sounds fishy to me. Is it delivering a true 16x9 image without any loss of resolution? If so, why would you use an anamorphic adapter?

And secondly, flipsidekrew suggests shooting 4:3 and adding bars in post... why? What's the advantage?

the advantage is no loss of res / and getting that widescreen look.

Did you get Barry Green's book / DVD with your DVX? This is all explained pretty extensively.

There are far too many threads to link, just search this forum for squeeze mode and you will find all your answers and more.

Like I said, Shoot Me! I got excited and posted my question before I searched. :Drogar-Dum(DBG):

Although, I have been searching since my last post and I found this, recently posted by Mikko Wilson:

"Shoot fullframe. The best way to shoot for 16:9 with the DVX (without using an anamorphic adapter) is to shoot regular full 4:3 and then crop and conform to 16:9/or letterbox in post. This gives you the most control and best options for a high quality scaling from the DVX's 4:3 imagers. It's a good idea to mask off your LCD with 16:9 framelines when shooting to help you frame correctly, run a search for ideas how. The prefered methos id ot use a "screen skin" overlay on your LCD, but you can just use rubber-bands to get you started too."

Can't say I understand why, but that seems to be a common belief. Anyone care to disagree?

And no, I don't have Barry's book yet. I understand it is very informative.

Thanks!

I find nothing wrong with squeeze mode. I use it almost all the time, then crop to 2.35:1

I use Vegas. Test it out for yourself. The resolution loss isn't really that big of a deal (especially if the footage is going to end up on DVD).

SQUEEZE is really just a poor term for it. Normal is 4:3, SQUEEZE is 16:9.

There is no "best" mode, only the best mode for your circumstances and project. There are a lot of factors: What is your target aspect ratio? How will you edit and deliver your project? SD broadcast or DVD? Will you have to hand your tapes over to someone else at the end of the day?

I've done just about everything you can imagine:
1. Shoot 4:3, letterbox to 16:9 in post, resize for native 16:9 DVD
2. Shoot 16:9 and hand over tapes at the end of the day
3. Shoot 16:9 and letterbox to 2.35:1 in post
