View Full Version : Negative Gain?
I was looking on another forum and somebody mentioned that the HVX is able to set the gain to -3db. Is that really possible? I tried last night and had no luck. Anyone have any ideas? Thanks

Nope. No negative gain setting on the HVX.
I guess it was wishful thinking. Thanks

Negative gain would darken the picture.
CineGamma sounds like it does. It lowers the overall exposure, right?
There was such a great "gain hack" with the Sony VX1000. I miss it.

negative gain would be the equivalent of the ND filters?

Sort of, in that it darkens the picture, but that's not the point -- the point would be that negative gain would hopefully make for a "cleaner" image (i.e., less noise).

Is negative gain just based on where your reference point is? For example if Canon decides to designate their -3db gain as the zero gain in every other cameras?

Pretty much, yes. Everyone sets their "zero point" based on their opinion of an acceptable tradeoff of noise vs. sensitivity, near as I can tell.

i wish the HVX had a -12DB option. that would rock. In daylight it would look perfect. and with proper lighting indoors, it would be SUPER.

I was just talking to the DP here on Reno 911 this morning. He shoots everything at -3db with a polarizer on so he can shoot at 80 ASA. It gives a cleaner picture with less noise. Interesting.....
