I'm going to be doing a 3 day shoot far away from any power source, I only have two batteries for my hvx. my question is this, can I hook up a power converter to a car battery and charge my batteries? I will be on a snowmobile and I could pack a car battery along with all my gear. Has any one tried this or does anyone else have an idea?
thanks in advance

I don't know about charging, theoretically you should be able to. I have used portable jump start batteries in the field and they work nice. You also would need to buy a converter, from the cigarette plug-in to normal power plug for the camera. I was on tripod and just plugged the camera into the portable battery with converter.

Some battery chargers (including ours) accept 12V as power input. This is a much better, cleaner way than using a 120V power inverter (you are thinking of making 120VAC from 12V?).

Check these out on ebay. If you do an ebay search for "HVX200 charger" you will come up with a lot of these otions. Be aware that you can NOT use these to power the camera directly, only to charge the battery. Now the other problem is the battery takes longer to charge than it does to drain so if you have the camera turned on continuously you will need a minimum of 3 batteries. Then on the other hand, 3 batteries will be enough to last you all day 10-12 hours of continuous power, so you could then just have 3 of these chargers hooked up overnight to re-charge the batteries.

I use a basic radio shack DC / AC converter, and I recommend a speed charger so that your second battery will be ready by the time your first one is empty.

I also use a DC / AC converter, purchased an additional charger (800-332-5368) and bought a couple extra of these. . .

Thanks for the info, it's nice to see that I have multiple options.

I've had a power converter in my van blow a charger. There are lots of warnings around about using a car power converter with battery chargers. It happened to me, I believe them.
