720/60P. Is this mode the best for this camera? It is smoother looking than 1080i is it not because it is progressive. I just am curious what is the absolute best look for this camera for film look. Can you shoot 720/24p for film look? Does this look better than 1080i/24p???

Film like combined shallow DOF with certain film like settings, including progressive capture at 24p.

Looking "better" isn't the issue; its shallow DOF, combined with film like settings in the HVX200 and/or in post, and great lighting.

1080i/24p is higher rez than 720.

For film look, 720/60p is exactly the wrong choice. For reality, sports, news, live events, etc -- 720/60p is perfect. For making something look like "film", you're infinitely better off with 1080/24pA or 720/24p.

Hi Barry,

so what is better though, 1080i or 720P???? What really looks better? 720 is not interlaced so does it look better??

At the same frame rate, progressive looks better than interlaced, so 720/60p looks better than 1080/60i.

At the same progressive frame rate, 1080 will look better than 720, so 1080/24p looks better than 720/24p.

I did not realize this camera shoots true 1080p, that is the best quality available is it not? So a film with a desired film look should always be shot always in the 1080/24p mode?

Thanks

The HVX always images progressively internally, and creates all of the recording formats it supports from that, including the interlaced formats.

Whether it makes sense to shoot 1080 is a question only you can answer. The frame cadence of 720/24P and 1080/24P is the same, and if you are creating a DVD, you are going to downsize to 480 or 576 lines anyway, and 720P gives you the flexibility of overcranking/undercranking.

1080/24pA gives you maximum image detail and the least compression. 720/24pN gives you almost the same amount of detail (about 80-85% as much) and takes up 40% as much space. If your priority is recording space, 720/24pN makes a great tradeoff. If your priority is ultimate image quality, 1080/24pA is the better image.

I've been searching the forums, and it sounds like y'all might finally be able to help me out with a 60p question.
I recently shot my first feature with the HVX, recording to the FS-100. At the time, the FS-100 did not support native frame rates, so all my 720/24p footage is actually 60p (with duplicated frames). I'm afraid to start working with it in this form. I'm using FCP 5.0.4. Does anyone know an efficient workflow, especially one that would safely allow for an eventual film-out?
Thanks,
-Adam

1. Update to FCP 5.1.4, it is the most robust version for editing DVCProHD.
2. Download the Panasonic Framerate Converter (http://www.panasonic.com/business/provideo/support/fcphd.asp) plugin for FCP and have it do the pulldown removal.

I heard that FCP 5.1.4 allows you to remove duplicate frames when importing P2 footage. Is that true?

Also, I have the framerate converter, but the converted files don't retain the sound, so I would have to re-sync the audio in a sequence, and export new clips-- right?
