View Full Version : Trim clip on P2 card
I have a long clip recorded to a P2 card, but there are only portions of it that I have a need to archive. Is there any way to split this clip into several clips and trim out the unneeded portions before transferring it to hard drive? I would love to be able to do this while the card is still in the camera, but if that is not possible maybe in P2 viewer?
Thanks,
Cmus

Hi,
if you use Mac with FCP you can grab any portion of the clip and tranfer what you need to the hd.

I would still back-up the P2 card as is....
Then if using FCP ver. 5.1.2 you can capture the portions you need and save as QT mov. or if On Edius you can edit what you need and then create another
p2 folder with the shorter versions.

Can't trim in-camera on the smaller cams; you can on the bigger cameras like the HPX2000. And P2 Viewer doesn't have any capability for this either. FCP lets you do it in the import window.
Any PC solutions out there? I am not a Mac user. Avid Media Composer (what I am using to edit) doesn't have this capability either as far as I know.
Thanks to everyone for replying.

Cmus, see us in the Panny booth at NAB for something new on Windows. :-)
The new more sophisticated P2 viewer developed for a large German Broadcaster should be able to do it. The DVCPro50 version has been approved by the customer but I assume that only the HD version will be launched officially.
I am not going to NAB. Has this announcement been made yet? I would love to have this functionality.

Any new info on this? I would still love to find a way to shrink some of the clips I have archived. No need for an entire 3 minute file when all I can use from it is about 10 seconds. I am not using FCP. Windows-based and Avid over here. Has this new version of P2 Viewer been released?

There's a new program called P2CMS that might be able to do it. The existing P2 Viewer doesn't. I believe Imagine's TEP product for the PC can do it.

However, I can't find any current or updated info about it

I realize this is a few months old, but as I sit here backing up 150 gigs of P2 files and structure to tape (LTO-2) . . .
At the cost of a blank DVD (or cheap additional HD's for that matter), why would anybody want to do this?
Not trying to be contentious--just wondering.

I saw a demo of P2CMS overseas. It's a combination of P2 Viewer and a data logging utility. AND IT WAS RUNNING ON THE MAC. Also available for the PC, but the version I saw was on the Mac.
So yes, there's a Mac version of P2 Viewer, called P2CMS (P2 Content Management System) from Panasonic. But there's been no announcements so I don't really know what to say about it -- I mean, is it an internal application only or is it going to be released? Is it for sale or free distribution? I don't know. I'll be attending the SMPTE show next week here in Aus so I'll ask if there's anything more definite that's known about it. When I was shown it I asked if I could talk about it and they said "yes" but there wasn't a lot more to be said, and without some facts about distribution and timelines I figured I wouldn't stir up any rumors about a product that might not come out, so I've been waiting to hear more definitive info. I have heard that it could be released as early as the beginning of next month, but again I'd feel much better about saying something if I saw an official press release or something like that!
Great Barry, thanks. Please communicate to them that there are people (or at least one person) who would love to have this functionality either added to P2 Viewer or in whatever new package they are releasing.
Dregenthal - It's not really an economic problem, it's more of a convenience issue. I would much rather have a single external HD with 500 gigs of footage worth saving than 10 HDs each with 50 gigs of good footage and a whole lot of space being used up with garbage. Makes accessing the things I need when I need them much easier.

It was running on a Mac?
As in Macintosh?
Wow.
