hey all. ive added another lens to my collection with the help of my sister.... who bought for me.. anyways, forget my personal life..

i have a 50mm lens love it..

ive got an 85mm lens, its a little beat up but clear optics...

then ive got a new, well used to me, 35mm lens. but i dont seem to understand why the focus acts weird. for some reason, the further away i get from infinity focus things always seem to be blurry... am i missing something about how a wide angle lens works.. because if i focus the furthest away from infinity how far should the camera have to be from my object to be IN FOCUS.. hope that makes sense. thanks

Doesnt your lense have distance readings? For example my canon fd 50mm right in front of me has (I will use feet to be clearer) focal distance markers from 1.5 feet to 30 feet - its beyond that where infinty focus kicks in - as in 30 ft to infinity.

OK to start, viewing your clip you say your five feet away and have it at the closest focal setting, I am assuming a focal point at about 1ft from your camera so of course nothing in your image is at that distance thus no focus. Then you move the focal point to infinity which is beyond anything in that room, so again nothing.

"How come when I am all the way across from infinity nothing is in focus?" refer my first point.

Then you bring the tripod in to 1ft and part of the laptop falls into the focal distance. Which is accurate.

When you switch to your 50mm your screen is in focus because its at the right focal length.

I think your confusing the infinity terminology, it doesnt mean all in focus, it means beyond the focal range as marked on your lenses. Every lense size has a different minimum focal point. The higher the mm the further away. So a 50mm might be 1ft but an 85mm will be about 2. Thus in turn a 35 mm will be about 0.5 ft.

So at min. your 35mm will have its focal point at the front of that laptop keyboard, whilst the 50mm will have its focal point on the screen.
