I just opened the boxes from B&H with my new Cartoni Focus and Miller Solo VJ legs. I think I am missing something. The head will not secure to the legs properly. The claw ball tightening mechanism from the head is too narrow and it fits straight up through the hole on the bowl of the legs. Is there some type of adapter necessary to make these two items play nicely together?

Confused,
Cmus

Congrats on the equipment, I have the same and am especially blown away by the VJ legs.

All you have to do is get a large washer, cover it with gaffer tape then poke a hole in the middle just big enough for the big bowl screw (so it will always be aligned right). Works like a charm. I'll try to post a pic tomorrow to aid my murky description.

Take a look at the first post on page 2 of this thread. They will tell you how to resolve this problem.

There is a problem with the stock-tie down on the Miller VJ legs. Not really a problem but more of a an issue when using these legs with the Cartoni head.

Thanks to both of you for responding. I will use the washer technique until I can get Cartoni to replace the part.

Just out of curiosity - is one of these companies using a non-standard size? This is my first high quality tripod setup so I don't have any other gear to compare things with.

Tmnt -

any chance you could post the picture you mentioned? I got a washer, but it is not working as well as I would like. If the tripod is very close to level without adjusting the head position, when I go to fine tune the adjustment it tends to "slip" into the position that puts the washer exactly flush with the round opening on the bowl - meaning I can't get the head to be exactly level.

By the way, I got in touch with Cartoni and they have told me to send 20 bucks and the old clamp and they will "upgrade" me. Frustrating when you lay out this kind of cash and they have to nickel and dime you to get it to work properly. The phone support at B&H was not very helpful at all.

cmus, I didn't realize you purchased the head and sticks from the same seller. I'd get on to them again and ask firmly for a replacement 'clamp', if you have to send the other one back first get them to pay for the post. By my rationale they should be the ones out of pocket as I'm sure you would not be the first to come across this problem. If they were at all a reasonable company you think they would only be too willing to help with the amount you have spent and might spend in the future.

I'm not sure what you mean when describing the problem. Just make sure you have a big, thick washer. Like I said, gaffer tapes pretty good to use on it.
