I have a video guru who told me that (at least the 100 and 100A which he says he had owned) does not record true 60i. It's actually a progressive frame and it split into two identical fields to make a pseudo 60i. Is this true?!

I am thinking of buying the camera, but I actually want to use it for regular 30fps interlaced video, not for 24P filmmaking.

No that's not true, the DVX scans its CCD in regular interlaced fashion for 60i video.

The HVX, on the other hand, does what he said; the HVX can only scan progressively, and slices its progressive frames into fields to make 60i. But the DVX can scan interlaced or progressive.

OK, but does it scan progressively at 60 or 30 fps? Because if it scan only 30 times per second, and then it takes two fields from the scanned frame to make two fields for the 60i, then it's not true 60i and the playback won't be smooth on a television monitor (and I need smooth playback for viewing on TVs).

Sorry, I didn't read your post carefully enough, plus I had put the post in the wrong forum anyway!

So, just to confirm -- you are saying that the standard defintion, cheaper, DVX100B does 60i properly, but the more expensive HD, HVX200 does not do 60i properly, but instead takes it just from progressive frames?

I was looking on the spec sheets and reviews for HVX200 to confirm this, but I couldn't find any mention of this. How is a potential buyer to know this significant limitation?

Panasonic doesn't cop to the limitations of 480/60i on the HVX. Its too bad. Do not buy an HVX if you plan to be mainly shooting 480/60i as the image has excessive aliasing problems.
The DVX 100 (A or B) shoots excellent 60i or 24P have no fear. Its 60i looks the same as any other 60i camera.
