Is a standard CRT b'cast monitor totally useless for color correction of HDV footage?

If you want to keep it in the HD realm, yes...very much so. HD and SD have completely different color spaces. So if you were going to color correct HDV and output to DVCPRO HD, D5, or HDCAM, you'd need an HD monitor. Output to DV, beta, Digibeta, SD DVD...then you'd need a capture card that would downconvert the footage to an SD signal that you could then monitor and correct.
