Hey guys, have any other Mac users noticed Spotlight bogging down their machine? I upgraded to OS 10.4 and I HATED the widgets; now, Spotlight must go. It's useless to me. Does anyone know of a relatively simple procedure to accomplish this? Thanks, Logan L.

index the machine and youll never deal with it again, all 4 of my macs and the 2 at work got faster with 10.4 after i let them index the HDD's for Spotlight. And spotlight is a lifesaver when managing the amount of projects that I do.

Spotlight really helps alot...

What does "indexing the HDD's" mean?

That basically means letting Spotlight read the contents of all of your volumes the first time. It can take a little while. You'll see a little dot in the magnifying glass when spotlight is indexing, typically following OS10.4 being installed. One can also blow away the index and/or force a reindexing of all volumes with specific commands entered in terminal.

I used to hate spotlight as well as it was a constant pain the arse. I reinstalled the whole OS more than once to get it working right. For the past year or so though I've had no issues. The only time Spotlight is actually "bogging you down" is during indexing. You can check activity monitor to see what's really bogging you down.

I index my drives, too. Not a single problem.
