I'm pretty sure it's a language. Has different dialects, with Cantonese being one of them. (Some people do classify the dialects as separate languages, but I don't really need to argue that point.) I'm not picky as to which one I use, but I know Mandarin is the most common.

I have a few chinese friends. You wanna send me the line, and I'll have my wife ask them. If someone gets back to you in the meantime, then let me know :)

FWIW Mandarin and Cantonese derive from the same language, but Cantonese is now a slang version of Mandarin, and people who speak Mandarin can't understand it.

That's not true. People speak Mandarin and Catonese. Mandarin is considered the "universal" language of China. Cantonese derives from the region of Canton which is where Hong Kong is. It is a very popular dialect, and a lot of Chinese movies are spoken in Cantonese because that's where Hong Kong is. Most people who know Cantonese know Mandarin. But it's not the same vice versa.

There are many dialects throughout China, though Id assume Mandarin as its the most widely spoken language in the world.
