I just bought a Sony v1U and shot some stuff HDV 24p and brought it into FCP. now i want to export it so i can put it on a website and most of the export results i'm getting are squeezing the image. i even did a 16:9 and it squeezed it up and letterboxed the image inside the squeeze. What did work was the ipod conversion but that leaves something to be desired since there are loads of artifacts. Must be a better way.

I'm assuming you got rid of your interlaced frames and you have a nice, clean 24 frame progressive image. And your question is one of resolution.

I always do multiples of the full raster res and that works great for me. So change your res in the geometry tab of compressor to be either 960X540 or 480X270. (You'll need to turn off any "preserve aspect ratio" type buttons. you have to force this otherwise it only looks at the native pixel ratio of 1440X1080 instead of 1920X1080.)

When i kick it out to compressor, i've got all these options like web download, web streaming, dvd best, etc. I'm not sure which of those to use or advanced format or i just pick my own.

If you want to make a web version, choose web streaming or web download. Then change the geometry tab as noted above.
