Adobe After Effects 7 Mode Switch

HI there everyone,

I was going through some tutorials and i inserted a black solid on top of a video in composition to create a wave effect. i applied the effect to the black solid and when i switch the solid mode to Screen, nothing happens, the display still shows black , I am not sure what I am doing wrong, i think the screen would make the solid transparent, could anyone help me with this.

screen mode basically works off luminance, so anything black is not going to show up at all. anything pure white would be opaque. if youd like to adjust its opacity, just use the opacity setting for the layer. but likely what you should be doing is either creating a new adjustment layer and applying the effect to that, or using a grey solid. im not really sure what effect your trying to achieve, but i'd try these things out and go from there.
