OK, so I might be missing something here, but I was doing some test shots.

Here is the SETUP:
HVX at 720/24p - connected to a 23" HDTV with the component output.
FS-100 v3 at 720/24pn

Here is the PROBLEM:
After recording to the FS-100,
1. I switch the camera to VCR mode,
2. turn off the Thumbnail View, and
3. press play on the FS-100.
The FS-100 shows that the clips are being played, yet there is no image on the HDTV. There is however an image on the camera LCD.
I've checked the cables and everything is ok. (when I go back to camera record mode, the image shows up on the hdtv)
I've been able to do the same setup and substitute the component cable with the S-Video cable, and it does show the clips playing. So the FS-100 is playing video.
Any one have this problem???

In hindsight, the only thing I can think is that the HVX can't output the input digitally from the FS-100 set at PN (native) recording to the component cable but it can to the s-video output. I didn't think at the time to record in regular 24P rather than 24PN and see if that worked.

The problem is that the HVX, regardless of what is coming in through 1394, won't output anything over component. S-video and composite are no problems, but nothing on the component. 'Tis a bummer, as it effectively eliminates the HVX as a device of some convenience for monitoring HD output out of an otherwise ill-equipped NLE.

Coughcough... firmware upgrade... coughcough...

Now this would be a great firmware upgrade. I'm assuming this is also something that the Cineporter will have over the FS-100. since the camera will think its coming from the p2 card. or are the playbacks from the p2 card also not viewable through the component cable?
Thanks cbrougham.

It's just hobbled for incoming signals over 1394--P2 clips play back just fine. Yeah, I was a little miffed when I found out about this "feature", as I thought I was being super-clever and found an easy way to monitor HD out of our Avid Xpress Pro setups. No dice. The only deck or other device capable of this for Xpress is the Panny HD1200A deck (and those above). I guess I can understand why Panasonic would disable this feature in the HVX, but it sure would be nice.

there's got to be a way to make this damn thing work. it must be firmware. because the camera is capable of outputting the files from the FS-100 to the LCD on the camera, and to S-video, just not to component out.
Anyone aware of how to unlock this feature???????

pssss, pssss, panasonic tech guy, psss, common, you can tell me, I won't tell a soul. it will be our little secret.
thanks man, you da bomb!

Yeah, Panny really crippled that FW port, on top of using the cheap 4-pin connector that is just aweful. Even if you don't use the 2 power pins, you can still make it a 6-pin connector. The FS-100 does it!
