View Full Version : How do you record to a laptop? FS-100?

Im saving up for an HVX and occasionally doing research on how I want to use it when i get it.

P2 is still too expensive for me, and for the most part i don't mind being tethered, so recording to my Macbook Pro sounds ideal.

If I have the camera tethered to my 2.33ghz Core 2 Duo/2gig machine with an external HD, how do you record to it?

Also the FS-100, I remember everyone hating on it maybe a year ago, but i see a lot of people are using it now. Is everyone pretty happy with it? Does p2 have advantages over the FS100?

THANKS!

Through FCP's "Log & Capture", or through ScopeBox or through the eventual HD version of BenA's "DV Mon."

As far as FS-100 -- when it first came out, it needed some help. It's had three firmware updates and I think most people regard it as a solid solution now. The new 3.0 firmware upgrade gives it some new capabilities like 720/24pn-like record capability, and direct Quicktime recording for Mac FCP users.

thanks Barry

What is Scopebox?

And if i use Log and capture, how does that work? does the L+C window simply display what the camera sees and you record by hitting capture on the computer? or can you use the record button on the camera. This was my problem with andromeda. I have NO issue with being tethered, but I can't baby sit the computer while I shoot.

What is Scopebox?

Just google it, and you'll find the web site that has all the information.

Better to do that and come back with questions.

Because you set "device control" to non controllable, you are not going to hit the record button, but instead capture now and escape to stop capturing.

Barry,
do you happen to know if ScopeBox already supports streaming DV100 PAL framerates...?

No, I don't really know anything about ScopeBox other than that it's available...

If by streaming you are referring to anything pNative, no.

Well, just any DVCproHD direct-to-disc recording in PAL framerates...?
720p?
1080p?

Hi all. Just got my hvx and tried to record directly to a laptop with vegas 7, I later learn't that vegas lacks a codec to do that. So, I downloaded a trial version of RAYLIGHT.... but it still won't work. I also got the trial version of DVRACK HD, but it still doesn't recognize the camera. Ist it possible at all to record directly to a pc without a p2 card? if so... what do I need to do to make it work?
When I switch to dv mode, vegas and dv rack work perfectly. Any help is highly appreciated.
Thanks.

Raylight enables you to edit MXF files and DVCProHD under Vegas, but Vegas must have the ability to talk DVCProHD if you want to capture live video with it. Since it doesn't, you can't use Vegas for live capture at all.
There no longer is a trial version of DV Rack 2.0 HD because of licensing problems. The downloadable trial version of DV Rack 2.0 is the non-HD version and doesn't support DVCProHD.

Right -- Vegas cannot do live capture of HD or DVCPRO50 from an HVX, no matter what.

DV Rack 2.0 HD can. EDIUS can. And Avid XPress Pro HD can. So yes, you can capture live streaming video to a PC. Best tool for the job is DV Rack 2.0 HD.

Does DV Rack HD support streaming PAL framerates now?

As far as I know it always has. There are a number of PAL users in the DV Rack forum, and I don't see comments specific to that recording format.

I almost forgot about DVRackHD because of the PC only politics...
So,
can I run DVRackHD under Windows on IntelMacs?
And since the trial doesnīt offer HD try out anymore - can I DEFINITELY stream 720pN in 25p?
I canīt find anything in the specs about it and need to know for sure...
Thanks!

You can't stream PAL 720pN into DV Rack not because it's PAL, but because 720pN doesn't stream over firewire at all. The same holds true for NTSC.

Ok, thanks,
so what about 720p25 then?
And maybe DV rack can strip the extra frames?

If I use dvrack hd for capturing, will I have access to all the functions? like variable frame rates, interval recording and all the full functions of 720p/1080. I'm just curious, becoz I treid it with the trial version of dvrack, and some functions were blue. However, I did it with the sd trial version which obviously doesn't recognize the hvx. Could that be the reason why?
Thanks!!

Yes, non-native recording modes work with DV Rack. And it can also remove the pulldown for you if you record to AVI Type 1 files. If you select AVI Type 2, you have to do your own pulldown removal.

Variable framerates can only be recorded in PN mode, so that rules out recording them using DV Rack.

It has it's own Interval Recording mode, as well as motion-activated recording, stop-motion recording with onion-skinning and a bunch of other neat but specialized features.

There is no HDV or DVCProHD support in the trial version because of licensing issues.

Variable framerates can only be recorded in PN mode...

Myth. VFR can be recorded in non-Native mode, too.

Thanks for all the info. I got dvrack hd which is great.... the problem however is that, I get the message HDD running too slow! I have an Hp pavillion 2gig duo core with about 80gigs available space plus an external 500gig hard drive to dump footage on. I'm not computer savvy and dunno how to improve the speed or fix that problem. Any help is appreciated.

Secondly, I tried to import the recorded footage into vegas using raylight demo version, but the picture is squished or appears 4:3 though the original is 70p/30p. Even setting the project properties in vegas to 720p didn't fix it. What I'm I missing?
Lastly, any word on when vegas will upgrade to dvcpro hd?

Raylight's not going to help you unless you have MXF files.

For MXF files Raylight sets the aspect ratio correctly.

Lastly, any word on when vegas will upgrade to dvcpro hd?

Raylight is their recommended solution. Search the Sony support
knowledgebase for AG-HVX200.

Mvb I thought raylight would have the mxf files in the demo version... which is what I have. I can't understand why it doesn't set the aspect ratio right? Btw, i looked up the sony site for the hvx200 and saw nothing. Is there any way of increasing HDD speed to record with dvrack?

If you read the Raylight Tutorial there is a link to a sample P2 card image.

The direct link to Sony's DVCPROHD page is here

I'm not an expert on DVRack so I won't attempt to answer your last question, but the beauty of Raylight is that it will run on nearly any DV-capable computer system in its proxy mode (Raylight Red) yet can render at full HD quality when you're ready to output your movie.

Thanks a lot guys, you have all been of great help and I appreciate it. I bought raylight but I can't get the aspect ratio correct. I selected mantain native frame size on the control panel but it's still 4:3 even though I shot 1080i/24p. Which takes me to my second question; Why are there too many jaggies? I shot 1080i/24p of me fooling around, but with every slight movement of me... I see big ugjy jaggies. I'm sorry if this has been answered numerous times already. I'm still waiting for Barry's book plus the p2 card hence all these experiments.

All help is highly appreciated especially on getting the aspect ratio right with raylight. There support forum/faq doesn't mention it anywhere.
Thanks a billion!!

Unselect native frame size and turn on Raylight Blue. Then bring the MXF files into Premiere or Vegas. Windows media player does not play MXf files correctly.

Did you know there was a tutorial on Raylight? Follow the links at http://dvfilm.com/help
