I'm curious about some of the cheaper alternatives to the FS-100.

Is it possible to record directly to an ipod, an external hard drive, or directly to a laptop (PC)?

Yes, provided you have an NLE capable of capturing DVCPROHD (ie FCP, Edius Broadcast, etc).
