Replacing Footage?

Hey.

Ok let's say you have you're whole project done...Everything is keyframed etc. Then you decide you want to replace one of the keyframed elements with a new picture....well simply....how do you do that?

My project is done but, i need to put in a new logo and some other things in replacement to the ones that are there already...

you right click on the element and do unlink media i believe. or just move it out of the folder it's in and relink the media to whatever new image you want.

Select the file you want replaced in the project window. Choose File > Replace Footage > File, navigate to the file you want and Open. If you already have an instance of the file you want in your project AE will simply import another instance.

Much easier way is to import the new logo and select the layer you want to replace in the timeline then option (alt) click the new logo and drag it into the timeline. It will keep all the parameters the same, but replace the footage.

Nice and clean. I like it. The problem with MY approach is when you want to replace a file in one comp that you're using in another that you don't want to replace.

Another alternative is to select the layer you wish to replace, and pre-comp it.... leave all the settings in the existing layer. Now, in the precomp, you can hide the graphic or video you wish to replace, and layer your new content into the precomp in it's place.

The nice thing about this approach is that it's super easy to reverse if the director comes back and says .... "Nah ... I liked it the way it was before" :p
Just switch off any and all new layers you put into that precomp, and turn on the original layer and you're good to go.

Pre-comps are you friend ... always.

I assume you have already done but here is the 'cool' method of replacing timeline footage ( just pretend you've never heard it):

1) In the timeline select the layer to be replaced.
2) From the project window Alt + Click the layer to change.
3) Drag it over the selected layer in the timeline.
4) Done.
