Hi,
I can't seem to figure out how to capture variable frame rates to the firestore.
In the manual it mentions the ability to to timelapse recording, only in DV mode, but that is all I can find.
Is it possible to do any slow motion to the Firestore? I would really like to have access to variable frame rates, do I need a P2 for that?
Thanks

I shoot with v.3 firmware to QT pn at 720/60
Bring it into a 720/24p sequence in FCP 5.1.2
Create a new project and copy clip to it.
Select it in the browser and then use the DVCProHD frame rate converter to convert to 23.98 for slow motion
Haven't gone the other way, but no reason it shouldn't work

Indeed I was just going to ask this question myself, but more along the lines of: can someone explain in lamen's terms why this works? I get a little confused with all the frame rates and conversions. In other words, 720p/60p refers to progressive resolution/frame rate? Then how come there is still an option to change frame rates under the scene file settings?
Pretend I'm 5 years old. Sometimes I feel like I am.
Set up for regular recording, not Native Mode. 3.0 FS-100 does not support VFR's in Native modes officially. The FS-100 was always abel to do VFR. Shoot in a normal 720p24 mode. In your Scene Settings, set to Film Cam, then set your frame rate to whatever you want. Shoot.
In FCP, the DVCPRO-HD variable frame rate converter will conform it to the time base of your Sequence. The VFR Converter in FCP will only read the original 60fps format that you've recorded in, and conforms that to your Sequence's frame rate.
It's in my freebie video below.

Ben:
What is the difference between what you suggested and what I suggested?
Why go to the film mode?
Why not just shoot 720/60 and import it into the 720/24p sequence setting and then conform?
Because on the FS-100, which is what we're discussin, variable frame rates are not officially supported in Native modes. You can't use P2 Native nor QuickTime Native on the FS-100 to get variable frame rates. In which case, you set the HVX to 720p24, set it to FilmCam in the Scene file, then to the alt frame rate you want.
FCP's frame rate covnerter uses the metadata that records to conform it to the frame rate base of your Sequence. Remember you have to use FCP's frame rate converter before you ever drop the clip into a Sequence to get the over/under crank effects.
You may be able to "trick" it into doing something else. But why waste all that time finding something that won't work any better? Just follow the official workflow and not worry about it. That's all.
You method may work, but you only have the 60fps overcrank option, none of the other speeds.

Man, I can't wait till your green screen tutorial comes out.
I've got to get through the major packaging fubars that cropped up on the two that are supposed to be shipping now. Then get the Studio Artist For Videographers tutorial out. THEN I'll get to decide which one is next. But, as of March 1st I'll bet set to spend more time and focus and get the library wrapped up quickly. Pushing it along as best as I can. Keep checking back!

Remember though that even with v.3, the FS-100 does not directly support VFR -- yet.
Yes, it always has. I do VFR with the FS-100 every week. I have been doing it since it first came out. Just not in Native modes on the FS. Works just like VFR in non-native mode on the HVX.

You say tomato . . .
That's what I meant to say. No pNative support.

So...
If you have recorded VFR to the FS-100, can you also dub the footage to tape like you can with the P2 cards?
You can connect the FS's computer FW port to play back the video to the HVX and record it to tape, but it's not something I'd do. You won't get the VFR effect, I don't believe, as the FS plays everything back at regular speed.

No. That's a P2-only feature.

I browse these forums quite a bit but don't really post, primarily because I don't usually need to. Rather randomly I'd like to use this thread to quickly thank the people who post their expertise online. It's a phenomenally generous thing to do in my opinion and I find it continually useful.
This thread just told me something I didn't know, and am rather glad to learn about. Er, so, yeah, thank you.
