In Maya (auto desk) when I try to boolean an object with another, it completely deletes its self, does anyone know why? Sometimes it works and sometimes it doesn't. I've tried to delete the history and nothing.

Anyone?

I've had this issue before with booleans, not sure why it happens, but I usually redid it and it worked fine, Maya is funny about that...

Do you mean duplicating the two pieces and then try to boolean the object again? For me to do my project completely over, wow that would take some time.:Drogar-Evil(DBG):

sometimes duplicating works...I never wrapped my head around why this happens, just switched to C4D and things seem so much easier than with Maya...

I've heard a lot of people saying a lot of great things about Cinema4d. What was the learning curve for you? I use Lightwave, which is still years behind other apps in most areas, though version 9.1 did introduce some particularly cool render/camera options.

I've been reluctant to try learning a whole new app though.

I was worried about re-learning a new app, but after using c4d only for a short time now with no real time to really dive into it, I'm in love with it. So much easier and once it clicks, and it does easily, its smooth sailing.

I'm probably going to end up doing a project in it soon, I'll post results.

I realize this post is a bit old, but thought I'd chime in anyway.

Depending on the version of Maya you are using, you may have problems running booleans on non-closed solids. So if you had a plane and were cutting a hole into it with a cylinder, for example, you might have to extrude the edges of the plane and append a polygon to the back side to create a cube.

The other possibility is that you need to delete history, and/or freeze transforms on the two objects involved.

Hope that helps.

Thank you, yes I'm using auto desk 8 unlimited. Ummmm maybe that might work (freezing), I've tried the history no go. I'll give it a try tomorrow. :)

Didn't work. :(

I just ran into this again today. I'm not sure exactly what fixed it, but these were the steps:

1) I made sure both were closed objects (select all edges, convert to selection border, extrude a good way, then fill hole and triangulate the new face)

That didn't work, so I tried this:

2) Separated half of the objects that I was trying to use as my cutting objects into a new object.

After that, I could successfully complete the booleans, using only one cutting object each time.
