Hey everyone. It looks like within the next few weeks I'll be upgrading to an HVX. I have several questions however.
The main reason for this switch is because we're producing a kid's show pilot episode, shot entirely on green screen (except for the intro of the show) and I think having an HD product will help in the long run with pitching to networks anyway.
1. Will Avid Xpress Pro HD support 720P 24P?
2. How much storage am I looking at for archiving?
3. Can you cropa 4:3 image from the 16:9 HD image for SD broadcast?
Thanks!

1. Yes, but for keying you'd rather use 1080, and Avid doesn't really have proper 1080/24p support yet.
2. For 720, less than twice as much as DV. For 1080, 4x as much as for DV.
3. Of course.

Cool, thanks Barry. Now, is 720P still a huge step up from keying out DV? We have had amazing success keying DV, and I really want to stick with Avid right now for our edting solution. Is 720P a big enough step up for keying?

Yes, 720p is going to be better because you have twice the color resolution. But there's a bit more mosquito noise because DVCPRO-HD uses 6.7:1 compression, vs. DV's 5:1. I'm just saying that for *ultimate* keying, you can do better in 1080 because you still get the 4:2:2, but it's more mildly compressed.
Yes DVCPRO-HD 720p @ 4:2:2 should be substantially, significantly better for keying than DV was.

You've always got the option of going DVCPro50 for keying, given the lower compression ratio - might give you a cleaner key.
Yes I know, it's SD - just throwing out all the options
(and solidifying your choice of an HVX)
You didn't wait long, did you Brice?
You trying to keep up with me?
:)

Thanks for the information Barry! I think I'll shoot some tests beforehand, to see exactly what I want to do

Haha, thanks man! I think we want the HD option :) I do know what you're saying about DVCPro50 though.
I am trying to keep up with you ;) haha! Actually the ONLY reason I am upgrading is for this show we're shooting, and since it's ALL green screen, we need a better option than DV 4.1.1

I'm going out right now to pick up a Genesis - just to one up you.
Good luck with the show.
I'm sure you'll keep us posted.
