I'll be buying a cheap notebook just for offloading purposes and I haven't really used windows for a long time, so i'm wondering if all or most software that will run on XP will run on Vista? More specifically will P2 Genie and P2 Viewer work?
I did search but couldn't find an answer. Thanks in advance.

Short answer is probably. XP and Vista are the same code base and app compatibiliy is very good. You may have to ensure that Aero (new Vista GUI features) is disabled as Genie and Viewer may require hardware accelerators for graphics that are disabled for a new approach/ industry standard in Aero.
Your mileage may vary, but a cheap notebook won't have much RAM and I would recommend running with 2 G if you are going to migrate to Vista.
If you are just using it for offload purposes, stick with XP would be my advice. Vista won't give you any benefit.

I would definitely rather stick with XP, all the newest machines are now being sold with Vista installed

I doubt that Panasonic's P2 drivers are currently compatible with Vista. It's a different driver model with enhanced security, so until new drivers are released, you won't be able to use either a PCMCIA/PCCard slot or a USB2 connection.
P2 Genie is based on the .NET Framework, so I would expect it to run flawlessly on Vista.

I agree that using a laptop with Vista just for offloading is overkill. The coming version of P2 Genie v. 1.2 will work on Vista because it uses the .NET Framework 2.0, but the current version might also work fine (haven't tested it though).

P2 cards in to the PCMCIA/PCCard does not work. i have tired. the installer CD does not see the PCMCIA slot so you can not install the drivers for the card.
Now i not saying it wont work, just its not working right now
