I keep reading about an inability to transfer 24P native over 1394. What is that all about?

you can trasfer it after it is recorded like any other footage - however while recording 24pn nothing is sent over the firewire

However with v.3.0 firmware of the FS-100 you can record the equivalent of 24pn MXF and QT 24pn directly through firewire to the device.

Not just to the FS-100, you can also do so to EDIUS, FCP, or DV Rack 2.0 HD. They all have the ability to strip out duplicate frames and create a 24pN-style recording.
