Hi
I just compared some footage I shot and offloaded wia direct export to quicktime via P2LOG, with some footage my DOP shot but offloaded with FCP5.1.2. My footage has a lot more noise than his. The camera was setup exactly the same way. Is there any possibilty that P2logger is doing some strange compression when it transforms the files to quicktime? Anyone do any comparisons...am I losing quality with P2LOG to quicktime exports?

I've never noticed any difference between files that I've imported with FCP versus those with P2 Log. As I understand it converting to QuickTime is just rewrapping the file so QuickTime can read it.

Now, if you're looking at the footage with QuickTime, then it has a tendency to make the footage look horrible. The first time I imported some footage and looked at it with the QuickTime player, I was horrified. It looked all grainy, full of noise, bad, bad, bad.

But once I brought it into FCP, it looked fine. Once I played it on a HDTV, it looked awesome!

But, I've never seen any difference with either using P2 Log or P2 Import in FCP.

thanks for the answer...sounds logical...and yes I have noticed the quicktimes look rougher that the files when they are imported into FCP. I've sent a note to Imagine asking them the same thing. Let's see what they say.

We just use Apple's HD codecs to rewrap the bytes so there shouldn't be any difference in quality. But the QT player comment rings rather true. There's also differences between the QT player from PPC and Intel_Mac...
