I'd like to thank my producer, the studio, my mom, everybody who participated in this, the crew, the production designer, my wardrobe team, the grip, gaff, people everywhere. And finally the NYCdvxuser crew for being awesome.
We are sorry to announce that this will be an exhibition only piece. Although it was shot with the dvx [screen grabs to come!], it does not have a character named Eric or Erica and the music used is copywritten. I made this in the spirit of dvxuser.com; just to make it.
here's the link: http://www.dvxuser.com/dramafest/loa...Matryoshka.mov
thanks larry R and everybody for the massive amount of work needed to pull this together.

i;m sorry edgen and herman. unfortunately i work in an odd way. I find music before i edit, and sort of edit to the music. without it i feel a bit lost during the whole editing process. next time i'll find a composer first and then edit to his track, fine tuning it afterwards.
also the music i used is mariachi music! haha

thanks aram.
i shot this several days after the katrina all night shoot. Although i was still slightly delirious from a combination of sleep deprivation and fever, I really felt like a lot rubbed off from that experience of shooting with the whole dvx nyc crew. I was more aware of the lighting aspect, even if i didn't have all of the tools or lights used that night. It got me thinking.

Compelling intro music. Is it original?
I like his grimaces as he ponders on the box, they seem very natural.
Don't like the slow-mo as he reaches for the box, clashes with the style established so far.
Ha! I like the box-pulling scene where he reaches from one end of the table to the other.
Boy!!!! Great use (or lack) of music at the end when he lets out that yell!
Funny short. Not sure about it being a Drama Fest entry. Maybe Comedy Fest?
JimtheJib

thanks for watching and for the feedbaclk.
The music isn't original... its from the mehor de mariachi volume 1 or 3, called borrachia (i think).
I believe that its drama mixed with comedy, leaning more towards comedy. Drama for me is a very loose and open ended word.
In the future i'm thinking of expanding this short by tagging a scene on at the end or beginning, but im still debating because it might be ruined by any explanation of how the box got there or why. It might also be ruined by showing what happens after. It depends on how its done.
Maybe this is not what you where looking for but... After the the eyes open and she screams I just laffed my butt off for some reason....
Movie did look really good...
i was trying to make people laugh. Im glad the film got the response i had imagined.

you scream like a girl. But this one fits nicely into your cannon. You've developed a pretty specific sensibility, and it's nice. Now, when you're a big-time Hollywood director, don't forget the little people who made you stay up all night and get sick...

I’d classify this as a pure comedy.
The Mariachi music was sweet. Nice touch.
The directing and script seemed to be an exercise in editing and composition rather than trying to tell a dramatic tale. I enjoyed it in that context. And the whimsical manner in which you presented it was endearing.
One element was curious. Specifically, your choice to linger on the glass of water. Was it just because it was a cool shot ? What you might want to practice/ consider is weighting your images (both time on screen and visual highlighting) to see where they fit into the grander scheme of your communication.
Beyond that, why is that chick so scared of the box ? Why, why why ? Her head in a box is puzzling, but she screams at the Russian doll ? She has strange priorities. Was that Russian vodka she was drinking ? That would explain it. I once drank too much Russian vodka and screamed at a whole bed full of stuffed animals...something about cheating on me…
Thanks for the flick. Great fun.

this was a film that i made for fun. It took only one afternoon and i both filmed it and acted in it. Using my handy dandy tv, i hooked up a video cable so i could see myself. i see what your saying about the film, but it was mainly supposed to be an absurd film. i wasn't trying to make it dramatic.

the choice was mainly to show the characters uneasiness. I got tired of the face looking a bit nauseus so the hands were a nice alternative. Also it looked cool.

Ha ha!!! cool flick...
Why the mariachi music?
JimtheJib
02-05-2007, 10:18 AM
timur: no you da man! at the beginning of march things begin to slow up for me. we can do it then.
ive had an idea which ive been wanting to do with you for a while.
roman: i chose mariachi because at the time i made this i got really into mariachi music and i was listening to it a lot. so then i decided to use it. i think it heightens the abusrdity a bit and throws the audience off a bit.
i saw your flick. it was beautifully shot. did you use an hvx? i really like the bridge shot best and the alley way.

I thought you made huge strides in your last entry but, alas, you've missed the boat on this one. Where's the drama? Yes, I see you consider it comedy, but this is, afterall, DramaFest.
The problem with drinking water in a piece like this is the lack of continuity. The constant changing of what levels is a distraction.
JimtheJib
02-06-2007, 07:08 PM
D'Oh. the water!
yea about the drama... oops.:)
I just made it to have some fun.
next time my entry will be in the appropriate genre.
thanks for watching! im really glad you enjoyed it.

I commend your efforts. Good photography but I didn't care much for the strange story. lol Great technically though.
What I couldn't understand was... did he have any idea what was in the box?
why was he getting nervous about opening it? seeing as the box was already opened :oS
Rather an amusing little story though :)
