I finally shot some footage today with my DVX and I would like to know the best settings to both capture and export my footage. I've been reading through most of the faqs here but I'm a little confused. In some instances it says to import as 24p advanced pull down removal and other times just as 29 fps. Can anyone point me in the right direction with this?

What mode did you shoot with?

24P advanced

Then yes, I'd import using the Advanced Pulldown removal.

What should i export as just 24p with whatever format i want?

Well -- then it depends on where you are going....

What is the final version??

Generally, when you shoot 24pA on the DVX your intentions are to go back to film or to web or DVD. Now, however... current thought (albeit a bit excessive) is that if you want to go to TV and uprez to HD you should edit in 23.98 and then add a consistant 2:3 cadence at the end to go back to tape for broadcast.

So...

What is your intent?

But short answer - yes, File - Export - Quicktime Conversion - pick a preset or build your own and use 23.98 as your frame rate. I'm starting to like File - Export - Quicktime -- Export using Current Settings Self-Contained and then bring that into Compressor. Compressor seems to run faster on compression than just QT out of FCP.

Arlight I'm basically just looking to use it for the web. Recently though I'm noticing someone has switched the settings on the camera so in reality the footage i have was shot in standard 24p not advanced. The main problem im having is upon capturing the footage has a bunch of horizontal lines on the footage. Even with the export the lines are still there.

Ok

Time to back up.

So most of the footage is 23.98 and then you've got some that you (oops, ) someone switched the nob and now is 24p and 29.97?

Ok -- you need to take those captured clips into CINEMA TOOLS and remove the cadence - 2:3 cadence. Then it will be 23.98 all progressive just like the other stuff.

Then you can go to the web in 23.98.

I like the BROADBAND HIGH preset out of FCP... but since have created my own similar to that in Compressor. Make sure you change the size if you have 16:9 footage to compensate for that.

Good luck,

No, I'm not saying they switched the framerate from 24p-29.97 fps but instead they switched the framerate from 24p advanced to just 24p. Should I still do the things mentioned above or what? Thanks.

Hey -- Listen to what I tell you!!

24p IS 29.97. But both are. Both are on the tape as 29.97. One is 2:3:3:2 cadence and the other is 2:3 cadence.

Yes?

When you captured the 24pA hopefully you captured it with the advanced pulldown removal.

Yes?

When you tried to capture the 24p material it said no Advanced Pulldown available... so you captured in 29.97.

TRUE but it still has a cadence that if you WISH you can remove and get it to 23.98 like the other material.

Yes?

Now, follow the cinema tools tip above.

Alright so I've conformed the clip to 24p via cinama tools, but I'm still getting the same problem with the picture. Basically even when capturing the footage it looks like this...

Should it look like this and get better with the export or am I doing something wrong with my capture settings?

No... this isn't right.

any chance you can send me 10 frames off the original capture?

And what you are concerned about is the 24p mode stuff?

My email is captmench AT mac DOT com
or if you have iChat it's captmench with a .mac account.
