View Full Version : Can't get past "1394 Device Disconnect" when trying to import from P2

As far as I know I've got everything set up correctly. It's in "1394 Device Mode." I switch to VCR mode and then hold the mode button for a couple of seconds. "1394 Device Disconnect" comes up and I wait for it to progress to the "1394 Device Connect" stage and nothing happens.
I installed the drivers provided on panasonic's site. Opened up Disk Utility. Tried it on different G5s. Nothing is mounting anywhere. Nothing comes up when I open up "P2 import" in FCP 5.1.2.
Anyone have any idea what I could be doing wrong? Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks so much.

Sounds like your not holding it quite long enough can be 5sec or longer...try it again.

I've let it go for 5 mins, still nothing. Could it be anything else?

Could be a bad firewire cable or a blown firewire port.
Never plug your camera into any FW port while it's turned on, turn it on only after the cables have been securly connected.
And why is Panny using a 4-pin FW port and not the much more secure 6-pin?

I concur with this but even the HVX manual says (pg 77) "When connecting the unit to an Apple computer" -- Connect the 1394 cable AFTER turning on the power of the Apple Macintosh computer. Otherwise. the unit may not be mounted.
Then further down the page, - Eject the P2 card and insert it again. If the unit is still not mounted, disconnect the 1394 cable and then re-connect it.
Sounds dangerous to me in a world of plastic static sources!
Yes, the computer should already be on, but not the HVX. The HVX itself should be powered off when inserting that FW plug from the HVX into the Mac. You'd think Panny would be wise to that already. But then, they use the flimsy unreliable 4-pin FW plug on the camera instead of the much more secure and stronger 6-pin. Go figure...

to avoid static problems and frying either the computer or the camera FW circuit, it is not enough to power off the camera !
the camera has to be physically disconnected from the mains power supply and from all other mains powered appliances like a monitor.

well, it looks like this thread is pretty old. but im having the exact same problem on my pc.
ive used my PC's firewire port to capture from DVX and it's performed FLAWLESSLY. I have also plugged in my HVX via firewire to my MacBook and it transfers the P2 data FLAWLESSLY into Final Cut Pro. This means that both the camera's firewire port, as well as my PC's (and macbook's) are in perfectly fine condition. So what gives?
Obviously, this rules out 99.99% of the solutions I've read so far.
I'm baffled. All I get is Device Disconnect and despite all my attempts to update drivers, reboot, blah blah blah nothing has worked. USB is exactly the same, even when I change the setting on the camera to USB Device. I tried 1394 Host in desperation, and thought it worked for a split second... but it was just a false alarm. -- I tried updating the P2 driver for my HVX and just got a little window that says "This installer will install AG-HVX200(P2 handheld) USB driver. Please connect AG-HVX200(P2 handheld) by USB2.0"
I do. It doesn't recognize it...
I can continue to edit in FCP on my macbook, but would prefer to use the Adobe suite on my studio PC. Sadly, Premiere Pro CS3 is taking lightyears to patch... I'm sitting here staring at the progress bar and have been for 15 minutes. What's the deal?
Any and all help GREATLY appreciated. This is driving me nuts.
I'm not about to start copying the .mov files over to my PC to edit.

You shouldn't use 1394 device on Windows, it's not guaranteed. Use USB device.
Go into the PC MODE option and set the USB DEVICE menu setting. Install the hVX200 (P2 handheld) USB driver. When it says to connect, put the HVX in PC mode (go to MCR and hold the button down for three seconds). It'll then go into USB Connect mode, the driver will install, and you should be in business.

I'm going to try that within the hour. -- Premiere just finished patching, and I'm about to give the mxf files a try.
Thanks Barry, I hope I can make it out to the Fat Monster set once again and meet you. You've been a tremendous resource on the boards and your books are thorough and helpful.
I'll keep you posted on the USB situation.

USB works but is painfully slow. I have a Dell 8 core workstation running XP. I am also using the Adobe suite. 14 Gigs took 150 minutes to transfer over USB. I am going to try to use different ports to see if there is a speed increase. I might be plugging into a hub that is sharing everything else and that could be causing the slowdown.
I too can't get it to connect using firewire. This is frustrating.

No hubs.
Find an active USB2 port.

Yeah, sounds like you must be working through a USB1 port somewhere. As David S. says, find a direct connection to an active, unfettered USB2 port. Go in directly; if there's any USB1 devices in the chain, everything slows down to USB1 speed.

But if all you want to do is transfer P2 files to the Mac (OSX), all you need to do is set the camera menu to 1394 DEVICE mode. Connect firewire, turn on camera, and put camera in PC mode. You do not need drivers. You should see your P2 volumes mount as NO NAME.

It's been a while! Well, I finally upgraded my Premiere to CS4, so now I can finally use my P2 cards that have been collecting dust these last couple years, but now there's a problem.
I have installed my P2 drivers, I have the HVX set to USB device and to PC Dub mode. It is powered on and says "USB Device Connect"
I can't get my computer to see my camera (Win XP 32bit) I have a P2 store and it's working fine, but for some reason I can't get my files off my P2 from the camera... Can someone help? I have P2 Card Manager installed - still nothing.
