Hello. I want to find out if i can plug a hard drive into the HVX and off load the P2 right to the hard drive and by-pass the computer step. Thanks

Yes, if the harddrive is firewire or a special kind of usb drive (I forget the name of the usb drives, but they have some inteligence built in and have a "push to backup" button on them). In any case the firewires are a little better (can do verification for example which you can't with usb).

In the case of Firewire, you need an SBP2-compatible drive/enclosure, and the HVX must be set to IEEE HOST mode.
For USB, you need a USB On-The-Go (OTG) drive. The OTG drive will usually have its own verification feature.

Do you know anything about IEEE 1394 mode?...is that what is used to do the transfer?..

It's all covered in the manual on page 84 -- you want IEEE HOST mode, not IEEE 1394 mode.
