agcohn, you think all "professionals" behave like professionals? lol
No, but if they're trying to convince other people that they're not full of ****, then it's generally a pretty good idea.

"for fun" can always just mean something other than real work like shooting peoples weddings and making music videos of bands. i sure would have called something like this "for fun" if i made it.
nice work ozone layer.

So are you saying wedding videography and producing music videos isn't considered "real work"?

No, those were my 2 examples of work. unless he is getting paid to make Meth and is going to sell copies of it, i dont consider it work, i consider it for fun.

Man it's sad,it's really sad that some of the negative comments about Ozan's trailer have been posted. And just because he posted that he did it for fun some of you want to ridicule him and his motivation? Some of you are insulted because he said he did it for fun?
Newsflash!!!!! Top professionals do what THEY LOVE TO DO;IT'S FUN FOR THEM.That's why they are good at what they do.It's called ENTHUSIASIM. MANY OF YOU WHO ARE CRITZIZING(sp) THIS DUDE WOULD NOT HIRE ANYONE IF THEY ARE NOT ENTHUSIASTIC about what they do.
If whatever you are doing it's not FUN to you anymore,If you don't get EXCITED ABOUT YOUR NEXT ASSIGNMENT,then you better get out of your profession whatever the hell it is. Because then you will definite produce mediocrity.
Some say he's not sharing info, well read the first 37-40 posts!!! Hell he posted on how he produced,in which I consider the MOST important part of any FILM and that's SOUND DESIGN. Go back and read it.
Hey this is the INET,you can't judge anyone's character FROM A DAYUM POST. Hell if I were Ozan, and I read some of those negative post ABOUT MY CHARACTER,I would not share anything else either. Why should I share info with someone who ridicule me JUST BECAUSE I DID NOT POST or share something FAST enough for them? How can someone know my schedule and time?
All of these negative comments is really could be a misunderstanding about the use of words and phrases. Man I learned when I was in the U.S Navy that you really have to understand WHERE YOUR SHIPMATE grew up. It's wrong to judge someone because his/her meaning or use of words and phrases is different from where you grew up. It takes ONE on ONE communication and face to face interaction to understand a person. AND A INTERNET FORUM IS THE WRONG VENUE on trying to get to know someone.
Again Ozan, that's a KICKAZZ TRAILER.
I'm out, I need to go cook some beer weiners for the Superbowl.

and this is a perfect example of how people twist what others say...
"for fun" can always just mean something other than real work like shooting peoples weddings and making music videos of bands.
So are you saying wedding videography and producing music videos isn't considered "real work"?
see...clearly said "real work like shooting" so how did you get that he wasn't saying it was real work? now let it end there because as normal would be everybody's explanation of what is there, what isn't there...theory/relevance/premonition/embellsihment...can we all just get along? :)

Wow. 1st time back here {on DVXuser} in months. Seriously.
Just saw a nice trailer, thought I'd leave some kudos to Oz and BLAMMO! ended up on page 26 of a sh*tstorm. I back-pedaled enough to know I didn't care to read any more.
Regardless of who or what alleged army created this well-cut and shot trailer, I wish them the best of luck and continued success be it for 'fun' or 'work', paid or pro-bono.... whatever.
Anybody smell sour grapes?

"I know Ozan, he does freelance camera for me sometimes.
I was one of the friends that he would send test edits to, so I'm familiar with the Meth project.
First off, Ozan is a talented director, I think we all can agree on that.
He's already getting bites from some production houses because of Meth.
He does about four specs a year, so he's pretty solid behind the DVX.
The thing that really impressed me, aside from his natural ability to shoot and edit, was how little resources he has to work with.
I've frequently seen jobs 100x the budget that dont turn out as well.
Here's the facts....
-His budget was around $900 CDN.
-SWAT uniforms were from a North Van company called Phoenix, and they're left-overs from an xmen3 shoot... so they were loaned to him.
-Ozan films for a Vancouver car drifting club, so he has lots of friends with fast cars who want to be filmed drifting for free ie:the black Merc.
-He didn't use a 35mm adapter.
-Helijet airways flies all over the lower-mainland like public transit, you just buy a ticket and film out the window.
-Vancouver is a major film hub, and has a very large percentage of hungry actors willing to work for free to build their reels.
Filmmakers can post an ad, and literally get hundreds of responses.
-He shot, edited, and did all the post by himself.... sound design was credited to someone else.
-The sand dunes are in Richmond BC, and are open to the public.... although they require permits to shoot big jobs.
-Most impressive thing to me was how he got into a small container yard for free... very tough post 9-11.
He was denied by about ten yards until he found a smaller yard that would let him shoot during some off-hours.
-Interiors are all properly balanced/exposed available light. Most are Ozan's friend's offices... the chief's office is mine.
Nice job Ozan, bright future ahead of you."

yet another tedious attempt to inflame, can't blame the fella for not wanting to come back to this thread or ever bother again to share anymore stuff on dvxuser - this site is a great resource but now & again a little witch hunt occurs & some people just can't help themselves - feel embarrased at the level of resentment shown here, it's doing nobody any favours & the only result can be that we won't get to see anymore work from a talented filmmaker - was really hoping people would have moved on by now

The project looks pretty good dispite all the critisizim. I did a film about meth as well and I'm pretty known for ultra low budget but even then it still cost me a couple hundrend bucks. You can't forget about gas, food(snacks), little props here n there, food agian, all that stuff adds up man. Here's the trailer I cut.
NO VALE LA PENA (http://www.clipshack.com/Clip.aspx?key=27E809515B51162D)

now it all makes sense! fake trailer! so no feature length production requiring serious cash...fake trailer means pennies...at least in my book.
however the sad thing is...it looks good enough that people including myself would like to see an actual feature length, but then that would require more work and not just fun...question is...can ozan deliver? he made the appetizer can he make the meal?
just kidding! geez dude why not say that at the beginning? then you might not have caught all this grief.

If you wait around long enough the truth reveals itself. Why didn't he say this in the first place? He had to wait until "Spielberg asked him?" Now I know. I've also watched some of the films w/intros on the lot and most people are on the white/a little dopey/videoiscool! kind of vibe, athropologically speaking. I'm looking forward to seeing the show. All these young men inside the 'lot' loft, fighting and hugging each other.

his video is without a question one of the best on that site. if he doesn't get selected we know it is because he didn't do it like he said he did. if he did do it, then he'll be on the show.

You should be very proud of this work. It is top notch. The quality beats out a lot of crap on TV and Hollywood. Your eye for style, pacing, video treatment and sound are all great. It is always a pleasure to see such well executed material. I hope you can get the entire feature made! Long live the DVX!

Really nice trailer. Gorgeous camera work, exciting flow to the trailer "storyline". Certainly teases viewers into "wannabe" moviegoers...
My only negative (Constructive criticism) thoughts are: too long, too many "developing story" shots around the shipping container scenes...sometimes Less is more? BEST of luck with your great movie making talents!

Did anyone else notice that the female FBI agent and the male FBI agent have almost the same dialogue and they deliver their lines a lot alike?
FBI CHICK
"but we both know that controling medicine pisses off "THE OTHER DRUG TRADE, the pharmacutical industry".
FBI GUY
What if I told you some bad apples in this group had their greedy little fingers in "THE OTHER DRUG BUSINESS, the crystal meth business."
Either he played around with the dialogue in that scene and shot it twice with different actors in different locations or it was repetitous dialogue.

That show is a gong show! Sooo unfair and stupid! They never called me!
I rember reading the 16 page document that i had to sign before sending in my film. It said they were looking for "the best of the best filmmakers"! Blah, what a load of crap!
I know a few people that got selected and are on TV!!! I still don't understand how they got chosen! There films SUCK ass and are barely talented. During the interviews they didnt really care about your filmmaking skills. They mostly care about your personality! They want to know the type of character would u play on the show. The BITCH? The BACK STABBER? The SILENT PERSON? etc... Its a Mark Burnett production, so viewer ratings and drama are more important! Filmmaking comes last! It will follow the same formula and style as The Apprentice.
90% of the casted filmmakers will be retards who dont know anything and are amateurs. The remaining 10% will be real true talented filmmakers. Now put them all into a house, mix them up into groups and you have yourself a gay TV show!
Alot of people were sooo desperate to get on the show. There are way better opportunities out there than ON THE LOT! If you love filmmaking, try very hard and produce awesome shi* that grabs people attention! I guaranty you will go places!
-
I think its wrong of you to say they are retards and what not. A lot of them may be new to film making and are working on their skills. Get mad at the people that chose them and not the chosen. Its not their fault that "the lot" didn't like you but hey, like you said...there are way more opportunities than "the lot" so why do you sound so hateful?
oh yea, maybe another reason why they didn't choose you is because you didn't really have a "short film", just a trailer. An amazing trailer at that but still, just a trailer.
well good luck to you and your future endeavors...hopefully your trailer got people interested.
opsy my post got deleted back there...

Naaa, trailer, short film, feature, music video, experimental or watever... didnt matter.
A friend of entered a 1:00min trailer and she was selected to the 2nd round for interviews @ CTV. Another did a music video and also made it the interviews. I wont say an names but there's a 3rd person who i know made it all the way to the show. His entry was also a trailer like mine but half ass. There's alot more back-story, unfairness and once you find out how it ALL works it becomes a waste of time. Time to move on.

Ozan, don't let these guys get to you on DVXUser. Most people that are complaining, and calling you a liar are just jelious. Don't get me wrong a lot of Demo Reels on here are amazing but considering you shot this on a DVX100a standard is truely amazing. Some of your shots were a lot more nicer then the HVX200. And I believe you, because I know a lot of people and my uncle is a detective and its not hard to get a swat team for 20-30 minutes of your time. Obviously your gonna have to block off the scene, tape everything off. But anything is possible if you try to make it possible. People need to relax.

I hope there are no initiation rituals here as this is my first post. I found the trailer and this thread researching the DVX100B which I might buy very soon. One thing I liked about the trailer, besides of course the style, was the lab work was being done by real scientists. At least they knew how to open flasks and tubes and use pipettors like someone who had been doing it for a while. I used to work in a lab and you get very good at opening things with the same hand you're holding them with.
Anyway, something I've noticed in researching cameras is that composing shots and post production are where it's at. Of course you need a nice camera. But all the bitching about different brands and models...today I've seen awesome stuff shot with a Canon GL2, a Canon HV30, Canon XL1, and now a DVX100. And I've seen really shitty stuff shot on all those cameras far more often. It really seems to be all shallow depth of field and post production color tweaking. I'm sure 24p doesn't hurt. And good editing, music etc. But the shot composition and the post production really make it pop.

This is a really funny thread.
Everything about the footage as presented could have (easily) been done by a one man band.
The clip is nice and clean, and effective.
There are those who praise the work, and others who start calling it a fake.
What's HILARIOUS is those who demand to know if it was shot with some affectation "DOF" adaptor on the camera... saying it's "impossible" to get those kinds of shots without such a thing hanging off the end of the lens.
I chuckle too much.
fishbeer- you're right, a lot can be done in post to make footage outstanding.
Having a head start with a good EYE, and the device to record it, are the first step in the process.
Good luck.
No initiation rights- unless there's a secret handshake I'm not familiar with!

I never really read much of this thread. Man I am amazed at the comments, anything is possible guys really. From my own experience getting approval to use locations is not very difficult. Use your business skills, explain what your doing exactly and make the time using them convienent for the location owner. The dof arguement was a joke (no one has zoomed in?).

Ozan,
Could you tell me how you went about exposing your shots? Did you put priority on your characters vs. the background? Meaning, sacrificing a little washed-out background in favor of details in the characters faces?

METH- the thread, the drama, the trailer...
Wow, I watched the trailer (excuse me... the short).
Three days later I finish the thread, does the drama continue? ;^)
Kudos, Ozan!
Tight editing, great grading, tight shooting (literally); the CUs, filled frames and foregrounding really add to the psychological feeling of tension.
Oh, OK, the (shallow) DoF, too. Good use of open iris and long focal length. No need for an adaptor.
And serious props to your sound editor!
(Was there ever any word on did he use stock tracks or original?)
The film's really good muted, incredible with the sound cranked!
Like others, I'm hoping you share your upconvert meth-od.
I don't do much narrative work, but those who do should be inspired, not intimidated (or angered).
Thanks for coming back to DVXuser, sharing, and showing us all your fine craft.
Good luck in your career.
