importing layers from Illustrator - help, pls!

I was working through an Adobe tutorial on creating 3D worlds out of Illustrator objects.

It had me select all the objects and release them to layers, then import the file as a composition in AE. I only got a single layer ("Layer 1") in the Project panel, which didn't even exist in the Illustrator file.

Any hints on what can go wrong in the saving/importing process? Thanks.

I've done this tut as well a while back, and if I remember correctly I ended up manually creating the layers and moving the objects to them. It wasn't too hard.

Just solved it. Tutorial says to choose "Open" in AE, when you really have to choose "Import." That worked for me.
