Hi there,

I am just curious how others are archiving their media. I am chewing through thousands of GB's backing up all of our HD media. When I shoot on either the P2 or FS100 or straight to hard drive, I back up that media to a hard drive that gets shelved. Then we have the xsan that i will put the media on and edit from. Of course you bring it into FCP and it creates movie files that stay with the project. Once the project is final, I then backoff the whole project including all corresponding media to two different external drives and then delete from the xsan. Essentially the MXF files are in three places. The movie files and all other elements in the project end up in two places when all is said and done and the final goes onto an another Master drive that holds all finals and even that has a backup.

As you can see we are extremely careful in protecting our shot footage. However, it is a lot of TB drives. I'm curious if anyone can offer a better way or if anyone might know of any new solutions on the market now.

Any advice is appreciated.
Thanks,
Angela

I started out using bare hard drives and an empty case from OWC. I'd leave the case open, swap out the drives and back up my footage. Each 250GB drive costs about $80-$90, so it was the perfect solution.

But then I saw the CalDigit Firewire VR. This is a firewire/USB unit that has removable drives built in. And you can order new drives from the company and when you get them, htye come with a box that holds two drives and allows you to write the contents of the drives, and it fits on a VHS shelf.

THAT is my new solution. Until Blu-Ray burners come out and are cheap.
