hello all.

i am about to purchase an hvx to shoot my latest feature film (my last one was shot on a dvx100a)... anyhoo, i am trying to sort out how much storage space i am going to need in post production and what "setting" to use as far as resolution - i presumed i would be shooting 1080/24p, but there is all this talk on the forums about 720p and i don't klnow what that is exactly...

am i going to need a terabyte of storage? more than that?

thanks in advance and sorry if this seems like a stupid question to all you pros out there! :)

If you shoot 1080, you will need 1 gig per minute of raw footage. Plus whatever for your editing, etc.

Probably the talk of 720 is b/c of over/undercranking (fast/slow motion).

Settings- That's just something you are going to have to experiment with based on your scenario, look you want, lighting, etc. etc. There isn't going to be a magic setting that you will find that will work for "everyhing". Though, when you get BG's HVX Book/CD, there are some great scene files in there for different "film looks".

Later,
Jason

For 1080, you'd need 4x as much storage as for your last one.

For 720/24pN, you'd need 1.6x as much storage as for your last one.

ok. thanks guys. here's one more question for you wizards:

if i have a 2 minute clip in 1080/24p on a removable hard drive, how do i just bring in a 30 second clip from the 2 minutes of footage into my NLE ?? with dv, i would just "capture" from the dv tape playing in the camera the footage i wanted, but how do i do the same thing with the hvx hd footage ??

i am thinking maybe i would import the entire 2 minute clip into a timeline, then export the 30 second section i want, then re-import the 30 second clip and delete the 2 minute one from my drive... would there be a generation of loss if i did this ??

make sense ? is there an easier way ?

thanks!

If you're on mac and using FCP 5.1.2 it allows you to import clips and set in and out points to get the piece of te clip you want or you can try this for quicktime clips. Its free.

theres is this update too. haven't used it with the hVX but came in handy when in DV.
