Hi all.
Info Please:

I am trying to roll to an external drive via firewire on my hvx. I am on a powerbook G4 and attempted to download scopebox free trial. It wont open with the camera on.
An error message comes up. And it wont recognize the camera if I open first then fire up camera.

A couple of questions:

1. What is the recommendation to enable rolling to external drive right from Camera (outside of firestore).
2. Does it roll in MXF format?
3. Does the camera need to be in p2 mode?
4. Can you roll to tape at the same time you are rolling to external Drive?

I am trying to avoid purchasing a firestore, because I want to purchase the cineporter as soon as its released.

I appreciate the help.

You can't record straight to an external drive from the HVX. At least not just any old one. The firestore, citidisk, and upcoming cineporter are your options for that.

You can record straight from the HVX by using an NLE that supports live capture, or by using DVRack HD 2.0

But, if I am understanding you correctly, you can't plug a HDD to the camera and record straight to it.

Thanks Jason-
I guess i should clarify.
I am looking for the most cost effective way to buy myself time for the cineporter to arrive on the market.
I currently have these tools available:

powerbook G4.
HVX.
FCP
External Hardrives up the ying yang.

I have a job coming up that i would like to roll to a hard drive by whatever means I can utilize the above tools.

Is DV Rack HD mac compatible?

Thanks.

No. I don't think DVRAck is Mac comp.

You can do live capture with final cut, though. If your external setup is fast enough, you should be able to go HVX -->FCP --> External HDD for live recording from your camera. I would recommend fw800. I have never tried this though, so I can't say for sure. I have done live capture from camera to EDIUS to eSATA drives, and that worked fine with 1080

Sorry this may be elementary, but how would you set that up in FCP?

I do have firewire 800 in the chain.

Thanks.

Sorry, man. I'm not a mac user. I can't help you with that part.

DV Rack will run under Bootcamp.

But, not on a g4, right?

Bootcamp won't run on his mac though, only on Intel macs.

Have you tried using FCP's log & capture? It's primitive but it'll capture live streaming video from an HVX.
