Do not shoot 24f SD using Final Cut Pro, FCP support informed me there is no way it will capture 23.98 it will default to 29f no matter what setting you try. The HD works fine, but don't shoot standard def. if you want 24 frame.

It's no different that 24p with the dvx, conversion done in cam. Just use a standard ntsc setup and edit, unless you actually want to edit in a 23.98 timeline for some reason, in which case, sounds like you can't.

I think there's a little confusion happening here. In SD the A1 shoots the same kind of DV that we've come to know and love on the DVX and the XL2. If you set it to 24p(f), the camera embeds the 24 frames within a 60i (29.97) stream using 2:3 or 2:3:3:2 (advanced) pulldown. So yes if you do a capture using the basic FCP "DV-NTSC" easy setup it will capture 60i video that still has that 24p look to it.

But if you want to edit in a true 24fps sequence you would shoot using the advanced pulldown (2:3:3:2) on the camera and within FCP use the "DV-NTSC (23.98) Advanced Pulldown Removal" Easy setup. That way when you capture, FCP removes the redundant pulldown frames and restores your footage to its original 24fps.

Just tried it here and it worked fine.

Juan I tried the "DV-NTSC (23.98) Advanced Pulldown Removal" Easy setup and in SD it captures 29 frames. I even went over it with Roman from Final Cut Pro support, there is no way to get the "Vid Rate" to 23.98 with SD. Am I missing something, because I would love to salvage this footage.

Did you shoot with 2:3 pulldown? Or 2:3:3:2? If with 2:3, then no, FCP won't remove the pulldown on the fly.

You should be able to run it through Cinema Tools and remove 2:3 pulldown though.

Thanks for the info. Barry. When I shot HD it captured in 23.98 so I assumed the XH A1 settings were fine. When would there be a time when I would want to use 2:3 pulldown vs. 2:3:3:2? And where would this setting be found on the camera. All I did was move it to 16x9 and this changed it to SD. In the future I will only shoot in HD, but I wanted to save some space on my computer and I thought SD would take up less space.

Maybe you can change the title from ** WARNING** in 'please help me' ?

bentranmer,

I'm on my way out so this is a quick answer but I'll write again in more detail later. Barry can probably chime in on this too because he's covered this in detail in his book, this forum etc.:

On the XH-A1 when you shoot HD the camera doesn't give you a choice of pulldown patterns because it only records the native frames. The choice of pulldown is only necessary when shooting in DV mode. In either case you should be able to capture and edit in 24p, you just have to match the FCP preset to your pulldown mode.

The rule of thumb though is if you're going to edit 60i (29.97) and your output medium or distribution format is good ole' NTSC then use 2:3 pulldown because the motion cadence looks more natural and less syncopated. But if you're going to edit and output in native 24P then it's better to shoot in 2:3:3:2 because FCP can do a higer quality pulldown removal (it just deletes the redundant frames).

Here's a link to an article that has a more detailed explanation than I can do at the moment.

But don't fear, I'm pretty sure you'll be able to capture your footage.
