I just did some test shots in san fran today, there is wayyy to much grain for daylight, am i missing something? I noticed later i had "peaking" turned on, when i noticed i turned it off, looked much better but after reviewing the footage at home its still all grained out... i had the cam in M (manual mode) any ideas?

Im gonna edit the damn footage anyways because the contents cool. F-in grain... :/

Is the AGC (auto gain control) on? Peaking does nothing to your footage, it's only purpose is to help with focusing.

Yeah, I'd check the AGC switch. If set ON, AGC is active even when everything else is manual. It also operates when Exposure Lock is pressed. Very nasty!

Yeah, it does have an application when all you care about is getting something onto tape in lowlight, but for set shots its downright nasty.

You need to set AGC off and keep it like that! Further more for the GAIN switch with / L M H / function, you need to set / L / to -3db in the menu. Now for almost all shoots you use this setting. Indoors, daytime outdoors you use L = -3db and AGC off.

You can choose to set /M/ and /H/ to what you want. Like /M/ = 0 db and /H/= 6db

If you shoot outside in full daytime and you do not use the -3 db gain setting you are doing something fundamentally wrong, no sky or ship will look good that way.

The "Why is my A1 footage so grainy?" seems to be the "What's the clonking noise on my brand new DVX?" question.

It's becoming funnier to me everytime I see a thread on it.

AGC must always be off imo.

This sounds so familiar....

At least it didn't take five pages of mindless rambling and condescension to figure out the problem.

But seriously, I wonder if maybe someone would be up to the task of writing some sort of "Out of the Box First Steps" or "Quick Set Up and Shoot" guide that could be stickied in this section. Granted, the first step should probably be "Spend some time getting familiar with the manual..." but I think you know what I mean. It might help reduce the number of these AGC threads.

AGC MUST DIE! and yeah, perhaps we should make this a sticky? kinda like the "whats that clunk?"

I was thinking more of making a sort of beginners FAQ than just stickying this thread, but whatever.

that would actually make more sense ;)

I'm more intrigued by the idea by the minute. I don't know if I'm really the guy to compile such a piece, but we should start throwing in ideas to include in it. Want to start?

I just modified the sticky in this section to include the AGC comment:
