Ran accross this link while searching google. Some interesting info, such as I never new (though I am a huge fan of both) that Kiss' Gene Simmons partially financed and produced a demo record for Van Halen. And he thought they should be called "Daddy Longlegs".

Van Halen is a much better name.
And God bless 'em.

What a great link !
Van Halen ruled; Van Hagar sucked.

Here is one not listed there:
Stone Temple Pilots
They orginally were merely called STP (Like the motor oil) and had to cease on using it. The STP never really stood for anything and many variations were tosssed around, including Shirley Temples P*ssy.
But the band name Might Joe Young is the true orginal band name for the Stone Temple Pilots; a name they literally made up after coming up with a bunch of word plays on the S T and P (from the motor oil)

EDIT
I knew this information from a source (I dated briefly a young lady whose roommate was a girlfriend of one of the bandmatres; I used too see these guys play in san diego when they were NOTHING) but alas ..
I just found the identical info on Wiki !

I respectfully disagree. I know that Eddie's style changed for the worst when DLR left, but I think they still made a lot of great songs with Hagar. Gary Cherone, on the other hand, really was horrible.

Gary Chewho ? :cheesy:
Well
I actually like Hagar from Fast Times and the Footloose soundtrack, I Can't Drive 55 is one of the first killer music videos; shiiieeettt ..
even a couple Montrose songs but the orginal DLR Van Halen years produced some of the best rock albums in history
Their first 6 albums just plain kick ass:
Van Halen, Van Halen 2, Women and Children First, Fair Warning, Diver Down, 1984 ...
-
The Hagar years were like ; oh, that's a neat catchy song; but nothing historical IMO

Hagar is actually a better singer, songwriter, and musician than Roth, but Dave had more charisma and cool.
With Hagar in the band, I used to call them Sam Halen.

Sam Halen ! That's better than Van Hagar !
And I 100 % agree with your take on that; Roth definately was the showman; a true Rock and Roll god

I got to see VH with DLR 3 times (5 with Sam). The first time was 1982 in Wichita, Kansas. A friend pooled together our money and bought several tickets that got lost in the mail. We were told to arrive at the office one hour before the concert with photo ID's. We did so and were let into the arena's floor level (before anyone else) where we promptly ran up to the front of their walkout island stage which had no security barrier in front of it. Later, when the rest of the crowd was let inside, several girls tried to push their way ahead of us but me and my buds held fast to the most prime of spots as Dave, Ed, Mike, and Alex got a better view of our drunk and stoned arses than they bargained for that evening.
Awesome!

I've always found the origin of Steely Dan's name to be intriguing.

I'm skeptical on a few of those. C'est la vie.

The Jethro TUll one is true, but it isn't the WHOLE truth. Apparently they were so bad they used to change their name all the time to keep getting gigs. Jethro Tull was the one they were using when they people started liking them.

Cool... I always wondered how Pink Floyd got their name...
