Right after Christmas, called around on an A1, an HV10, as well as a new bogen head, some small misc. gear, and a Kona card & box, figured I'd save people some effort and let them know what I found. I explained to everyone that I'd be ordering in a day or two, before the end of the year, for tax purposes, so time counted.

B&H
GRADE: A
As many know, B&H is highly trustworthy, but informed advice can be hard to come by there. Not so this time. Every associate I talked to in cameras, audio and lighting knew their stuff, and took time to talk, and not only on big ticket items. And I was in there for 2 plus hours on the last two shopping days before Christmas, and it was a zoo. Best overall price on the hv10, $950 plus free shipping, every other dealer I talked to said to just buy it from B&H, no one will beat them due to the volume of units they move. I did, shipped the same day I ordered on line.

EVS
GRADE: F
My phone contact, Derek, I think (notes illegible), took all my info, incl. mailing address, said he'd call back, then never called back. Late the next day some other sales person called, I could barely hear him over the background din, and he quoted me $3,999 for the A1 and said he didn't even have them in stock.

ZGC
GRADE: B+
Got Christine right on the phone, her price on the cam was $3599, which was not the best, but was close. She admitted B&H had the best price on the consumer hv10, was very nice, and didn't waste either of my time. She was honest and competitive.

CALUMET
GRADE:F
Gave them a try as I know they are big Canon dealers, price was $3999, no negotiating.

ADORAMA:
GRADE: C
Same as above, no negotiating, high price, but at least it was a quick exchange. I did buy a Lenmar plate from them, and that went smoothly, thus the C.

ABEL CINETECH: F
Closed for days after the holidays, no response to voice message left when they reopened, I called them again anyway once they reopened, and after being on hold forever and hanging up and then calling back, finally got through. Price was $3999, and I can't recall, but I don't even think NY had one in stock. Sales guy was pretty brusque, 2 minute conversation.

FULL COMPASS
GRADE: F
Never got through. Sat on hold twice for 5+ minutes, hung up both times, figured there was no way I'd buy from them; if they were that hard to reach for a sale, imagine if there was a problem.

PROMAX:
GRADE: B+
They didn't have the A1, but they were so helpful with info on the Kona card & box that I wish they did. Unfortunately, their quote on the card was high, but if I couldn't find a dealer that sold both, I'd happily have bought the card from them, as they probably would have negotiated and been competitive. Nice people.

ZOTZ:
GRADE: D-
Wow, what an odd experience. Even after two e-mail exchanges and a 20+ min. conversation, I still have not received a quote on anything.
Still, Brian, the owner, did spend a long time on the phone, so they made some effort, but nearly all of his advice ran counter to everything I've read about monitoring on nearly every forum. He was happy to talk for quite a while, but he tried to convince me to sell my my dell computer monitors and buy a samsung and use that to cc, or cc from a marshall on cam monitor, and kept trying to talk me out of the Kona card. Very odd. Despite telling him what I wanted a quote on and that I was buying within 24 hours, never got a quote.

ROSCOR/DISCOUNT VIDEO WAREHOUSE
GRADE: A+
Great experience, best price, best customer service. In the past, I'd never paid them much attention, as the DVW trade ads always look like a grey market shop, but they aren't. Now, I'm a complete convert. They had everything I needed, had the best price on everything other than the hv10 (by far on the Kona), $3538 for the A1, and the follow up has thus far been awesome. Cam arrived sooner than promised, not grey market, shipping was cheap and was upgraded to second day Fedex without my even asking, and the sales guy, Lee Drady, was excellent. He actually picked up the phone to call me and ask if I wanted my partial order shipped (no extra shipping), and then got it out that day. For pro stuff, these are my new go to guys.

Note: I didn't try coffee's seller, one stop ( I think) because I was willing to pay a little more ($38) for the comfort level of what I learned to be a highly rated reseller, as I rely on this cam to make my living. I'm glad he had a positive experience though.

Never heard of them. Did you take a chance with them, or do they have a good reputation? I can't seem to find much information about them.

Roscor is a first-class flagship dealer, and DVW is their discount division.

That's all the confirmation I need. Perfect timing, I was about to order in an hour or two, and that's a great price. Thanks a lot, DrHST, you just saved me some money.

I'd seen the DVW ads in the trades, and saw good things about them while doing a search here and at reselleratings. I'm surprised they aren't sponsors here or elsewhere.

Glad it helped. Forgot to mention, they also had the best price on canon 970g batteries, $147.

If you want a laugh here is a link to pictures of the Booklyn store fronts some of the forum's bottom fishers were considering when purchaseing the Canon A1.

http://www.dvxuser.com/V6/showthread.php?t=82809

Hey, I'm one of those bottom fishers :P. They had good reviews on reseller-ratings, haha.

Anyway, I called Discount Video Warehouse, and they were out of stock, unfortunately. Moving up the list, I called ZGC and also spoke with Christine. She was enthusiastic and helpful. I went ahead and placed my order with ZGC. She said if I have any problems with the camera when it arrives to call them up and they'll swap it out, but she said they haven't had any problems with the A1 so far. The camera won't ship out until Tuesday when they get more units in, so I'll be expecting the beast in a week. Very exciting times, indeed.

I just purchased the A1 from EVS and.....they were great. The helped me with the price to keep it at the lowest price on this board. If your in SOCAL I would advise you to buy from them. If you are out of state then I think it depends on shipping. The service I have had from them has always been outstanding. I was very close to getting the HVX or the A1. I really love the HVX, I was set on getting that camera until the A1 was introduced. After careful review and study, I made the choice to switch to the A1, even though I am a huge fan of the DVX. The HVX is an awesome camera, but the A1 just suits my needs and my price range a little better. I am sure I would have been happy with either.

After seeing the only fotage I found on the net:

http://dvinfo.net/conf/showthread.php?t=83295

It seems to me that the footage (although maybe not as good as Canon shows in this thread) would work extremely well for a Canon A1 B cam. the footage form this camera really stuns me.

Can't shoot 24f with the HV10, though, but the footage is beautiful.

Well, I finally traded in my FX1 at Adorama and bought the A1 from them. Hopefully it'll be here tomorrow. I'll just give some comments to anyone else who maybe thinking of doing the same thing.

1) Yes, Adorama buyback program is more much generous than B&H. B&H offered me $1825 for my FX1, the Beachtek adapter and an extra battery while Adorama bought everything for $2125. Still a bit lower than what I liked, but I won't complain too much.
2) If you're not living in New York then be aware that the whole buy back process can take up to two weeks. Adorama paid for my shipping from California and it arrived in about a week but it took them another week to evaluate the camera.
3) When they called you with a quote, I recommend you have a calculator handy because they will try to undersold your camera. I dealt directly with Jack Gold from the recommendation of another DVXuser. He repeatedly tried to raise the price of the A1 from their advertised price (telling me it's $3800 when the price on their website says $3600). In fact, I had to do the math myself to figure out what I'm selling my camera for (he would only tell me the difference) and it turns out that he's trying to get me to sell the camera for $1800! It's only after reminding him of the baseline price that we agreed on before hand (minimum $2000 for the FX1) that he finally gave in. If you do buy from them, KNOW the minimum price that you're expected to get and know the advertised price.

Overall, I supposed it was a pleasant transaction if my camera gets to me on time. I won't fault Adorama too much about trying to make a few extra buck but this type of behavior from a large retail store really makes me wary of dealing with them in the future.

does anyone knows anything about focuscamera.com

I believe its the same company as digitalfotoclub.com. They're authorized to sell Canon consumer gear (HV10, Eluras, etc..) but they're not an authorized dealer for the XH. For whatever its worth, I bought my XH A1 from digitalfotoclub.com without any issues. I just got my Canon XL/XH club membership card last week.
