Can someone share some examples of what 30f is useful for? I find the look visually pleasing in a weird way, but I just don't know what situations to use it for.

Thanks.

30F is for a hybrid sort-of-filmlook, but smoother-than-24p look. If someone's bothered by the amount of strobing they encounter in 24F/24P, but they don't want the hyper-realistic look of 60i, then 30F is sort of a middle ground.

Also, it can make for frame-accurate slow motion, if you import 30F into a 24P project and play it back at 80% speed.

However, 30F/30P projects are unsuitable for transferring to PAL or to film.

It's good for lots of things, but mainly it has slightly less judder/strobing than 24F and some find that to be a nice compromise between the reality look of 60i and the almost too-low temporal sampling of 24p.

It's also much better for internet viewing, or computer viewing in general rather than an interlace source. I'm shooting the Vista launch at CES this weekend and they requested specifically 30P (or 30f in my case).

as others have stated 30p doesn't tranfer to 24fps film very well BUT 30p look excellent on digital projector !!!
i shoot all digital 30p ( 29.97 for past 4 years) = looks good on SDtv , HDtv and digital projections systems ....

30P(F) is good for industrial videos, wedding videos, local commercial spots where you want a nice progressive look while still delivering a 60i master (but without any cadence issues).

i shoot 30P (F) always instead of "30i" (29.97fps) My reasoning: Simply because if i need to make a screen grab it wont be interlaced. I hate interlacing, i like a full frame because if you grab it to a still it looks A LOT better. Thats just my personal use, perhaps the ones above are more valid than mine, because you could always apply a deinterlace (blend) to 29.97i footage anyways.

When editing 30p, is the framerate 29.97 or 30fps? Is 24f 23.97 or 24?

t-h-e-w-h-o just confused me...

30fps works a little cleaner in lowlight also. Making it good for weddings, and TV spots/eng etc.

30p/30f is always 29.97. 24F is always 23.976. 60i is 59.94.

Two to go: 25p/25F is always 25.00 50P is always 50.00.
Isn't it lovely?

25/50, yeah... but it's the 24p quasi-religion that changed the world forever! :)

Me the heretic be fan of 30 fps :) Looks great on DVD. No plans to transfer to film soon...
