I suspect the Premiere Pro 2.0 has the same capability and if one uses to Cineform to directly ingest the direct input to hard drive one has a pretty efficient codec with which to edit.

Yes, it would likely work in Premeire Pro and Vegas too.

Hmmm,
interesting, so I have the option of a FireStore-C or...
a Dell XPS 12" laptop w/ 2ghz core 2 duo, 2gb ram, 256video, 80gb 7200rpm HDD???
for roughly the same price?
Holy crap, and I thought Apple was over priced!!

Elton would love to do this, but I only have one license for FCP and its not on my laptop :S This would basically solve all my issues. In the meantime I am waiting for something like DVRack HD thats mac native. THought scopebox might be it, but not even close.

The other thing that would solve it would be m2t support in an upcoming FCP upgrade.
Most agreements are worded such that the software can be installed on a desktop and laptop at the same time. You are limited to using the laptop or desktop -- not both at the same time.
Here's the pertinent portion of Final Cut Studio's license agreement:
"This License allows you to install and use one copy of the Apple Software on one Apple-labeled desktop computer and one Apple-labeled laptop computer so long as both computers are owned and used by you."

Nice find, dpc.
Good news. I personally would prefer owning an extra laptop over a Firestore. Yeah, it's more hassle being even more tethered, so to speak, but with a MacBook Pro you could run Console through Paralells Windows emulation for your tweaks, then switch over to FCP and capture the live output, with your archive already recorded. :)

You sir are my HERO for today! Wish I would read the agreements every now and then!
Add the Mt2 support and now I am more ahead than before.
Now I am happy!
EDIT: Installed!

i am interested... however i dont think my p4 2.66 512MB lappy will be able to handle it!
I'm hoping that something comes of www.bella-usa.com's Catapult, and that it's not vaporware. The Catapult coupled with an external USB 2.5 inch drive would be excellent. I especially like the price -- more in-line with what the FS should be (minus the drive of course).

There is also Revolution coming soon from Redrock, makers of the m2. This has been beta tested so I assume a full release is immenent.

For a 'really poor' man's solution for tapeless recording, I just found out that I can use iMovie HD (which comes with OSX). This way, I can record direct to disk (from my A1) on a Mac that doesn't even have FCP installed, and it also works without recording to tape simultaneously.
I guess it will also let me use my MacBook Pro as a monitor when recording to tape only.

There's also a record button in Quick Time, but unlike iMovie, Quick Time doesn't see the A1. I guess this will change with Leopard, which is due in a few weeks. Mac World Expo is on Tuesday, so I guess we'll know more about Apple's plans for HDV support next week.

my question is, how do we as a community of FCP users bug Apple to provide an update for FCP to work with m2t files?

you rock Dlight
dLight,
Could you post some more details on using iMovie for tapeless recording? I'm especially interested in: "it also works without recording to tape simultaneously."
I don't have an A1 yet, but will be buying within two weeks.
Thanks,
Paul

Just open iMovie. Connect the cam. Select the cam (I have two choices: A1 and the built in iSight). You'll see the output from the cam, so just press 'Import' when you want to record... I don't know if this works in play mode, but all the other modes should work. (When importing from tape, the normal modes don't work).

...and: you need to be in camera mode, not playback mode.

Coffee did you email? If so can you paste your request here, then the rest of us can copy and paste the same thing. If we all say exactly the same thing theres no confusion over what we want.

Ok sorry to revisit an old thread but heres my issue.
The HDV capture presets DO NOT allow you to see vectorscope and waveform during the capture or review.
This sucks and is one of the few unsupported formats.
