Hi
does anyone know a useful way of creating individual water droplets in AE that can be perhaps rotated in 3d space ?

Use Particular and a custom particle with some displacement/caustic effects should get you close. This is the only non-3D method of doing this to where you can move the camera in 3d space and see full dimensionality.

It all depends on exactly what kind of water drops you need. Rain-sized? Close ups of deforming droplets? You might be able to get away with using a plug-in particle system like Trapcode Particular. You can try their demo at:

If you need something fancier, then a full blown 3-D modeling program would be your choice, and then you'd do the compositing in AE.

thanks, guys for the advice, the rain drops will be close ups, want to be able to create some sort of bullet time effect with one shot and morph them into stills in others, in 3d space within ae...full 3d is not in my bag of tricks just yet, but if anyone also knows of a link (or software) to a simple way of creating actual 3d droplets, would be much appeciated...will try the trapcode plugin for now...
thanks again

You might want to check Particle Illusion.

Here you can see some of their water samples:

Trapcode makes exelent products. I have never work with Particular, but you should give it a try as well. Both software can be dowloaded as a trial version.
