It is actually pretty impressive footage, especially considering it looks like 1080 30p, yet it came from the little HV10, which is a 1080i-only camera. I think they did a good job of deinterlacing the footage, and the compression is very high (4000 kbits/sec!) but still pretty decent looking.
Not a bad feeder-deck/B-cam for the A1. ;)

I wouldn't be surprised. It looks great though and surprising. Might have to pick up one of these.

The footage on the HV10 looks awesome, just got mine last Saturday, played with it a little over the weekend. Outdoors stuff is amazing, inside in nat light is fairly noisy, but for a home vidcam, it's quite something. This is going to be a crazy week, not much time but I'll try & shoot & post something somewhere.

I don't believe it.
Although it is very nice footage, if shot with the xl-h1 it would be better.
Also, I can't see why canon would advertise a consumer camera with footage from a professional one.

Hahaha Yes, if you crack open the XLH1 you'll find a HV10 inside. The exterior is just for show. They lied about the XLH1 having 3 CCDs, it's actualy the same single cmos the HV10 uses. Hahaha Oh, man, this one was priceless.

Nice footage, Zak. Did you color correct it or is it straight from the camera?

straight. but not in full auto mode. it was locked into manual focus, balanced for daylight, and set at a manual exposure.

Yeah, I have some of his movies here and watch them regularly. I'm a big admirer of his work. Nice clip by the way, Zak.
(sorry for the off topic guys but it's not everyday that we bump into a Tarr fan)

Zak, that is some really nice off the cuff footage to be sure. I am very impressed with some of the cityscape images. The resolution of the cars is quite clear and beautiful. I have a question, granted your clip was point and shoot and the beautiful footage on the Canon website has probably been color corrected as well as shot in a controlled environment with professional camera ops, cinematographers, etc., to ensure the most clear, crisp and beautiful images. So, my question to you is, with careful consideration of the cams settings, do you think it would be difficult to achieve the same results as the example clip on Canon's website?
I know its just a one chip camera, but if the image is truly that beautiful, I am having a hard time figuring out why I WOULDN'T want one of these as a B cam (whenever HD is preferred), to my DVX100A's....I understand it is lacking in many of the professional features of the A1...and doesnt have nearly the same inputs and audio features...but the images of your clip and definitely the canon clip has me VERY interested in this little baby.
What do you think? A worthy HD option in place of an A1 if image is all I am interesting in, in a B camera?
Thanks!
Rick

i think it's remarkably sharp. the resolution is very impressive for a camera the size of my fist. definitely the best in its class. i wouldn't hesitate to put it beside other 60i footage from a three chip canon or something like that. it doesn't have 24p of course, which is why i set the shutter to 1/30 to get a little bit of drag, or smearing (these are not techical terms!) because it seemed a little more filmic, less like video.
and i bought it specifically for b-roll to shoot behind the scenes of the making of my features.

Thanks for the insight. Its just that I was blown away by the footage. And for a camera going for less than a grand...its hard to pass it up.

Wow, Zak's footage and this Canon footage is crazy. I know I've been an advocate of the HV10 + A1 combo... even more so now.
Makes me want to see some narrative A1 footage like yesterday.

I totally agree.
Thing is, Zak and to whomever has the HV10...do you miss not having 24p? I know the DVX is not HD, but I still love the imagery and the 24p is a big reason why the images from the DVX are so gorgeous and organic looking. But, not having the 24p...is that a dealbreaker do you think?

Althought I'd like to know what treatment the Canon team gave to their demo footage to get it to look like that.

You and me both. I am not much of a conspiracy theorist...but for all we know that footage is more than meets the eye...not only are they showing you probably the best of the lot but they might have tweaked the camera in a way we consumers can't.
Either way, I love the footage. I'm just wondering if I could get it to look more 24p-ish in post...Hmmm.....

Thanks mcgeedigital. Three quick questions:
Do Nattress Film Effects come in a version for PC?
If not, do you know of a comparable software for PC? And finally,
Is treating the HV-10 HD footage with this software incredible taxing and time consuming and wrought with really long render times?
Rick
PS I am so digging this HV-10 footage that my interest it way peaked...

You can use Magic Bullet on the PC, which is a slow render. I'm sure there are other options out there, but I can't think of anything other than Algolith (very expensive AE plug-in) off the top of my head.
Honestly, if you want a better 24p look out of it, you might consider trying to pick up a PAL version (since they're so cheap) and "smart" deinterlace 50i. It should look even better than 60i to 24p.

Hello,
If I want to shoot with the A1 standard definition, can I burn it straight to dvd?
And if I shoot it on High definition, what kind of dvd do I need to use? For editing, what is the best software out there? Final cut pro? Vegas Premiere? which one do you suggest? Your help would be appreciated.
Because I'm thinking of ordering my A1 tomorrow.
Thanks,

Hello,

i dont see why not after capturing it to computer.
And if I shoot it on High definition, what kind of dvd do I need to use?
i would just use a regular dvd, downconvert to SD.... and export to HD for web.
For editing, what is the best software out there? Final cut pro? Vegas Premiere?
Thanks,
any of the above will do.
I might order my A1 monday thanks again....
