So after using a Scrim Jim last week on a job, I decided that there was no reason I couldn't build one. The concept of the SJ is pretty simple and the parts shouldn't cost much I figured. Anyhow, after searching the internet tonight I believe I have found a good solution!

I have found http://www.8020.net/Quick-Frame-1.asp which sells 1" aluminum square tubing and connectors. From the looks of it, it would be plenty strong to hold a silk even in a light breeze. My only concern is that the connectors would be so tight that they would not come out easily when I needed to tear it down for storage. However, I think I could probably sand/shave one side of the connector piece so it didn't fit so snugly.

My calculations of cost to build this (without shipping of parts) is $47.20--which is far cheaper than the 72" Scrim Jim frame.

What do ya'll think?

you could always use PVC pipe for this. IF it is short enough, it shouldn't bow. Aluminum would be a better way, but connecting the ends would be tougher like you said and break down would be a little more complicated. I would go with PVC thin 1 inch pipe with connectors. How you connect the silk is another matter.

Two of the reasons I want to use aluminum is that it is lighter and is far more professional looking when you pull it out in front of a client (plus it is truly a better product all the way around.) It's also only going to be slightly more for the aluminum than PVC (maybe $30.)

My plan is to attach the silk via velcro just like the Scrim Jim. I also saw another post on a photo board about using elastic to put over the corners, but I feel like you could stretch the silk tighter with the velcro.

If you're indoors under really controlled circumstances, velcro is fine. I've used the Scrim Jim and it holds up fine. Personally, I'd much rather have grommets and trick line.
