Ok so I took the plunge and bought FCP 5.1 yesterday due to the whole HD thing but how do you import/open m2t files?
When I navigate to them they're greyed out so I can't bring them into FCP.
Anyone care to help me out?

I posted this here instead of the FCP section because here is where m2t file users will be more often.

oh you have to convert them in order for the NLE to see it?
grrrrrr.

Don't have to convert them for Vegas. :)
Except my computer is slow and .m2ts are a nightmare to work with.

FCP won't work with m2t's. It expects you to re-capture them live, which it will capture into MPEG-2 Quicktime movies, IINM.

so what is everyone doing to convert/re-capture their footage?
Is everyone using the tool from squared5?

FCP doesn't support m2t files, so the only way to cleanly (i.e. without the need for conversion) import your media from the FireStore into FCP is by recording the media as Quicktime files instead of m2t. Problem is the most recent update (2.0) does not support 24F. They are reportedly beta testing version 2.1 which will support 24F, but, again reportedly, will only work in the FS-C. (By the way, got this info from a Focus Enhancments guy on the dvinfo forum).

Coffee,
You need FCP 5.1.2 (get the free update to 5.1.2 via Apple Software Update) to capture QT HDV 1080 24p files from Canon 24F HDV. It simply rewraps the file to the QT standard and makes it FCP-editable. (demuxes the .m2t upon capture)
When you get the update, just select the HDV 1080p24 Easy Setup within FCP and you're good to go.
If you just bought FCP it should already be this version out of the box, but if not all you have to do is download the update.

Ok, thanks Elton.... I just bought the full studio 5 a few days ago and it was not 5.1.2 but rather 5.1 so I'm DL'ing the update as I type.
Thanks again my friend, you (and many others) have been a tremendous help in my journey.
The next time you're in NYC let me know. I owe you a few drinks. lol

Hey Elton,
I did the update throught the apple site but when I go to "About Final Cut Pro" within the program it still says version 5.1
Is it suppossed to say 5.1.2?

Mine says 5.1.2 on the app launch and on "About FCP". Maybe you need to reboot your mac? If you see the HDV 108024p Easy Setup then it's running 5.1.2

Ok, now I'm confused because I ran the update & rebotted twice but it's still saying I'm running 5.1
Where should I find the " HDV 108024p Easy Setup"?

Maybe you didn't get the full update. Try downloading from here: http://www.apple.com/support/downloads/finalcutpro512.html
If you do have 5.1.2 installed, the Easy Setup is under the FCP menu/Easy Setup--and then scroll for the HDV 108024p Easy Setup

I DL'ed that 2 times already and now a 3rd but I figured out what was wrong.
I copied the icon from applications and have been running FCP from that icon which is actually like a virtual 2nd copy of FCP on the system. Everytime I ran the update it was updating the original FCP app that was installed so it was working properly there, just now on the copied virtual app. I'm such a PC guy, lol.
So, I'm looking for the HDV 108024p Easy Setup but I only see HDV 108024p. There is no * "Easy Setup" there.
Are you saying there should be an HDV 108024p Easy Setup?
EDIT:
Also, in this "HDV 108024p" setup all of my .m2t files are still greyed out. lol, I can't win, lol.

well in that case, all the more power to ya. =)
I can edit on final cut like a pro, but for some reason i love premiere pro 2.0. Guess its cause ive been following premiere from almost the beggining. Final cut is a great proggy, perhaps if it was made for the pc i would make the perminant switch to it, but everything else i do is pc related. Plus maya for the mac drives me nuts. lol. Im sure FCP will have full support for M2T's soon.

Coffee,
You're not understanding what's going on--You select the HDV 108024p setup, and then you either capture 24F HDV footage from the camera, or you import Firestore QT HDV files. FCP doesn't edit m2t native currently. It's possible to convert your m2t's to an FCP friendly intermediate codec like photojpeg or DVCPRO HD, but with the new Canon 24F support you're meant to either capture off of tape or import from a DTE unit that records the correct QT formatted HDV files. (.m2v's)
I suggest capturing some 24F footage from tape to test it out.
Native m2t editing is great for the other apps, but FCP's implementation is the only one so far that lets you export a 24F HDV timeline (HDV 1080 24p) back to tape.
