After having completed some more weddings in the last two months, I've realised how much more I hate the unresponsiveness of the XL2 stock lens controls.

Can anyone recommend a supplier that sells the Canon 16x Manual Lens at a good price or an alternative manual lens solution?

I've tried telling myself that I'll get used to it but it just ain't happening.
The single worst thing about the XL2 has got to be the toy Zoom, Focus & Iris controls. I wish I could put my DVX lens on it!!!

Happy Xmas all,

Just got a quote locally for the Canon 16x Manual Lens - wait for it!!

$3,329 AUD (about $2,600 USD) Geez I can buy a brand new DVX for that price!!

Whoa, that seems step.

Are you talking about this one:

If so, I bought one and I think it works a heck of a lot better then the stock one. The one with the link does say it's for the XL1s and XL1 and I know they are coming out with one for the XL-H1 so maybe the qoute was for that.

No I don't think it's the same one as in the BHP advert. This one is made for the XL2.
I wonder what the differences are between the two lens (the canon website has little or no details about it's XL2 accessories.

I don't think that the XLH1 6x Manual lens is available in Australia yet, I checked it out on the Canon US site though & it even has a manual Iris ring - wow!!!

It's not unusual for pro video gear to be more expensive in Aust. - we just don't have the same demand as you guys in the US, besides it seems the brand & models of choice amongst event guys here (Sydney) are usually Sony PD170, 250 & FX1 - yuck yuck YUCK!! On the rare occasion I might see work from a DVX but then it's always shot in 50i. - what a waste!

I think if you find one that works with the XL-1s it would work with the XL-2. I've even heard of people using the XL-1s one with the XL-H1 it just makes the image a little softer but they use the same mount on all the models... but I'm not 100% on that claim... any body else?

Beziermask, although it says XL1 and XL1S there, that's the only 16X manual lens currently being sold by Canon, and their website specifically mentions the XL2 in their blurb (and product compatibility info) on it:

http://estore.usa.canon.com/SearchResults.asp?PARENTOID=4766

You could double-check with your local dealer and make sure the model number matches what they're selling, I suppose...

Thanks for clearing that up guys.

I think I'll just buy it directly from a US dealer because even with shipping & import duties applied I still manage to save about $1,000 on the local price.

Cheers,

Ahh well... after much consideration, I made an excutive decision and instead bought a shoe mount 7" LCD display from e-bay for $200 US. :)
