Mac, for this contest which requires H264 MOV files for online viewing. An HVX's extra resolution won't be helping you very much. You can get as pretty of an image for the contest files from a DVX.

Maybe, but coming from dvcpro HD, you get 4.4.4 color space at SD resolution, plus much less noise, and extra resolution in case of reframing needs. ;D

It's 4:2:2 colorspace, and I do agree, that has HUGE perks, especially if you like to work a lot of magic in post-prod.

Are we talking about turning a HD project to SD with color space conversion ?

(Head starts swelling with pain while anticipating new knowledge)

yes.

I've also noticed that shooting in 1080x1280 on the HVX (given that the chips are only 540x960) also comes out to about 4:4:4 color resolution.

Jason Ramsey
12-23-2006, 04:41 PM
Not to jack this thread, but if the colors are sampled 2 pixels at a time, then they are sampled 2 at a time, right? Downconverting to SD doesn't magically make every color get its own pixel for sampling. Or, if it did, it still has to go off of the 4:2:2 sample that the camera gave it. Right?

I have heard this 4:4:4 downconvert thing, but never heard the reasoning behind it explained thoroughly.

Perhaps 4:4:4"ish" would be more accurate when talking about downconvert.

Ughh, I guess we need to all go (or at least I do) read the article on color sampling again that Barry recently posted.

Take care,
Jason

J.R. Hudson

Seems like it pushes or squeezes the pixels into newer, smaller squares creating a new color space arrangement

4:4:2.6 - you're losing some red

As you can see:
YPbPr (analog version of YCbCr) from R'G'B'
================================================== ==
Y' = Kr * R' + (1 - Kr - Kb) * G' + Kb * B'
Pb = 0.5 * (B' - Y') / (1 - Kb)
Pr = 0.5 * (R' - Y') / (1 - Kr)
.................................................. ..
R', G', B' in [0; 1]
Y' in [0; 1]
Pb in [-0.5; 0.5]
Pr in [-0.5; 0.5]
Y' = Kr * R' + (1 − Kr − Kb) * G' + Kb * B'

yes.......

Barry_Green
12-23-2006, 05:31 PM
The reasoning behind the downconverting giving you higher color sampling is that the downconverted image will be losing half its resolution in each direction, but the color sampling is already at half resolution in each direction -- or, there's enough color information to make for a pixel-accurate map (or, nearly pixel-accurate; probably close enough in any case).

In other words, you have, say, 1440 x 960 in luminance, and you want to downconvert that to 720 x 480. If your 1440x960 image was processed at 4:2:0, it would have a subsampled color resolution of 720 x 480 already. So if you could scale the luminance and leave the chrominance alone, you could potentially be at 4:4:4 (every pixel having its own color).

That's the theory, anyway. The reality is that you're going to do to your resolution the same thing that chroma sampling does to your chroma. 4 pixels will become one. And the color of that pixel will be the average of all four pixels. Chroma sampling has already taken care of averaging the color together, so in the actual downconvert process you'll have four same-color pixels being converted into one.

So yeah, you'll get a pretty good approximation of 4:4:4 SD when you're done with the downconvert (but when going to DVD it's going to get resampled at 4:2:0 anyway, throwing away 75% of that chroma you were trying to retain... sigh.)

But then it gets a tad more complex if you're talking about 1280x1080 or 1440x1080 or 1280x720, none of which have an exact scaled 2:1 relationship to 720x480 or 720x576, so there's going to be some fudging going on somewhere anyway. And it gets worse with interlaced 4:2:0 chroma, so if you're going from 1440x1080i HDV down to 720x480i DV, it's not going to be as clean as it would from progressive or 4:2:2 interlaced.

Jason Ramsey
12-23-2006, 05:36 PM
Even if that were the case, 2 colors right next to each other are still not sampled as two separate colors with 4:2:2 color space.

They will be sampled as shades of the same color range that the camera thinks most closely approximates the actual colors. So, even if in the downconvert process things are getting re-sampled/squeezed whatever, at 4:4:4, they are still getting resampled from the camera's "approximation" of what the original color was. Does that make sense?

Let's use black and white right next to each other. Now that (only an example) may get sampled as a dark grey by one pixel, and a real light grey by the other, in the two pixel group that is sampling that portion of the screen.
So if you are getting this 4:4:4 downconvert, what would that mean? The downconvert process is not going to be able to magically know what those original two colors were. If it could it would have to be a really aware piece of software.

I've gotta stop, cause we are supposed to be talking about your Drama Fest entry MacGregor, which I am totally looking forward to, and digging your poster (as I mentioned earlier). Plus I haven't the technical know-how or knowledge to know or explain these things for certain. It just doesn't seem possible to make 8 dollars out of 5 dollars without doing some kind of investing (to use a bad analogy)

Later,
Jason

Just BTW - Even High end telecines at the moment mostly output to 4.2.2 (including the spirit datacine - at least in Europe). 4.4.4 in the broadcast industry (and by that, I mean finishing on TV) is generally done at 4.2.2 (4.4.4 is rare) - even for jobs with heavy post/ greenscreen work.

Having said all that 4.4.4 is a dream to key with. Hair etc generally is less of a problem.

or you could just cast bald actors and shoot 4.2.0

We urgently need a Jeep Wrangler, a new Audi TT, a Ferrari F430 or 599 GTB and two actors for the filming:

He should look like Philip Seymour Hoffman, in his 35-45s, shy and good person feeling.

She should be similar to Natalie Portman, very femenine, atractive but not exhuberant. Someone in which you would fall in love.

Whiout all this the film is not possible i am afraid.

There's Minnesota, and then there's Utah. :smile: Not saying it would be impossible. But I do think it would be harder to find an actress that matches what MacGregor wants, and doesn't mind a sex scene. But I could be wrong. I'm wrong about things every day.

But this is Macgregor we're talking about. He could probably just meet them in person, weave his magic, and the clothes would start to fly :)

Utah does have a lot a great actors. I was surprised when I moved there how enthusiastic and talented their film industry is. Stormfactory is right. I'd try the colleges (although BYU might be out) and the smaller talent agencies. Just a couple of weeks ago I worked with a young Utah actress who wasn't afraid to do risque things. It's just an unpredictable time of year out there.

Normally it dries up after a few sunny days above freezing (it is a salt area) but a fresh winter storm will dump snow and start the whole process anew.

There really aren't many places like it in terms of the isolated , endless-plane-of-white-look.

haha ok check the thread title now
we shot something else and obviously we are still considering the title

In case you are wondering what is going on here ...

Mac and Bruno (Zacharias) and crew were in NY for 2 days for a music video, then I went with them to Las Vegas and Nevada for some spec commercials. Along the way we shot this short. ENGAGEMENT, the original short associated with this thread, is a very good idea and script by Mac and Zach and it's very visually driven, so there was no compromising Mac and Zach's ideal vision for that script which requires NON-flooded salt flats in Utah. So that idea is tabled until sometime between March and July.

here's some info on the production trip in the thread called
"Macgregor: Cultural Learnings of America for Make Benefit Glorious Nation of Spain"
http://www.dvxuser.com/V6/showthread.php?t=84403

FOR THE CURRENT, CURRENTLY UNTITLED NEW SHORT (the one we actuality shot) ...
I came up with a basic idea that would take advantage of our shooting schedule and who was in what city when. Mac and Zach then took the story and really developed it into something that retained the basic gist of my idea but, is in most ways, more simple and refined with more impact I think. It was kind of an experiment in guerilla filmmaking and evolving a concept in during production.

So in a few days we'll have an entry ready for Drama Fest.
Now we just need a title :cheesy:

Wow, you can say that again. Jack, it looks like you are actually acting in this one, nice. How did you like doing that? Acting is not my life's dream (it would be if there was no such thing as film director, and then after that theater director). But it is the form which lead me to theatre at a very young age, which eventually lead me to film. But short answer is I like it a lot. It is more fun in a lot of ways than directing (less stressful), but not as satisfying in the same way.

Jack couldn't stay Away :)
heheh, but this is not my baby, it is Zach and Mac's.

they are the filmmakers, and I got to wear some other hats like line producer, story idea, and actor.

But yeah you are right too, this was a way for me to participate that didn't involve painting my apartment, lots of preproduction, or spending my $ ... any of which would have probably had the GF packing her bags :laugh:

Mostly when I heard they were coming to the states I wanted to crew with them to watch Macgregor light and shoot. In that sense it's kind of good the original short didn't work out this time (at least for me) because the original short was all exterior.

Cool, so did you learn a lot, or are they doing things the way you have been already as well (perfection)?

Can't say I'm glad you guys are entering :grin: , but I'm looking forward to watching the film!

See, I'm the polar opposite. Acting for me is much more gratifying at a deeper level than directing. The one thing that I learned from directing my short is... I don't want to be a director. I kept wanting to be playing one of the roles... :)

What are your specific needs? I might be able to hook you up with a good voice over talent. Male? Female? age? accent?... the list can go on.

It is 9:24 am here on the east coast. It would be 6:24 in California.

I've heard that there is an extension to upload until noon. I guess that would be west coast time... 5 and a half hours left.

That's what I heard.
