Hey guys, I just wanted to find out a few answers to a couple questions I have regarding the HVX, shooting HD and capturing.
I edit with Adobe Premiere Pro 2.0 which from as far as I can tell has the HD editing capabilities (I've never edited HD before), however it seems that I'm supposed to need 3rd party software in order to capture from the P2 cards? Is that correct? Or is there another way to do it? And is there anything I need to do differently when editing HD compared to editing DV? e.g. in regards to maintaining the high quality when it comes time to output?
Also, in terms of shooting, are there any major practical differences I should be aware of between shooting HD with the HVX and shooting DV with the DVX? Or will it all feel very similar, just the settings are on HD and not DV?
Thanks in advance for any help you may be able to give!
Dave.

Yes, for Premiere Pro you'll need to convert the MXF files to AVIs before you can edit them. There are a couple of programs that do this, but I believe that DVFilm's Raylight wins hands down.
You can get a demo and more info here: http://www.dvfilm.com/raylight/index.htm
DVFilm has given top-notch support here on this forum for their products, and they have a history of listening to their customers and implimenting requested features (for free too, so far). Most importantly, you can be sure your purchase is safe for long-term use, as they do not use Product Activation or other such technology to force you to contact them upon reinstallation.
I've used Raylight since April/May, and have absolutely no complaints. It lets you use the MXF files in basically any program that will edit AVIs. Very nice.

raylight works great for converting p2 cards as well as a proxy system for editing HD without taxing a low end machine. When shooting on DV you can capture as normal to premiere via firewire just like any other camera.

Arson, I know about capturing DV through firewire but I was concerned about how to capture HD, e.g. do you capture through firewire out of the camera like normal? Or do you need something to read the P2 cards, and if so, what?

You don't have to capture anything. That's one of the points of P2 -- the capture process is already done, and what's stored on the cards is what you would get after a traditional capture.
You transfer the files like you would any files from any kind of drive.

Ahhh ok thanks David, I didn't realise the P2 cards worked like any other drive! Thanks very much for the help.

if you have a laptop with a pcmcia slot you just plug the card in and xp will mount it as a removeable drive. No capturing, they are already digital files. If you dont have a pcmica slot or are using a desktop, hook your camera up via usb to a pc and it mounts the 2 p2 cards as 2 seperate drives.
