if your external mic is set to channels 1 and 2 and the internal mics are set to 3 and 4...how do you adjust the record volumes for the internal mics? i thought the internal recording volumes were supposed to match by default.

You cant. They are set automatically.

Man, how I wish you can record to ch3-4 through the RCA input. I don't understand why they didn't include this. What a waste of codec. They could have just put a toggle switch on the knobs to switch between adjusting levels on ch1-2 and 3-4.

I have to agree that this is the one really stupid thing Panasonic omitted with this camera. It would have been really easy to include the ability to bypass the internal mics and at least supply a mini jack mic level in with a software level adjust. As a long time audio guy I scratch my head at these sorts of things. Otherwise I love the camera.

I'm puzzled as well, I think it's a wasted opportunity.
With that said, there is no way to adjust the level of channels 3 & 4, they always operate at a level that is equivalent to having the potentiometers at top dead center.
If you need to control all four audio channel levels, the way to do that is to set the internal mics to channels 1 & 2, and the external XLRs to 3 & 4, and then run your external mics through an external mixer and control the levels there.
