Sorry if this subject as been covered.
I want to color correct 1080i footage at home with FCP. My final output will be SD DV. I'm used to high end color correction on 2K and 4K monitors, but I'm pretty impressed with the the powers of FCP, and I would like to be able to do some decent color correction at home.
I am not going to buy a broadcast monitor for the house..but 'will I be closer to a broadcast monitor with a computer screen, or a HDready LCD', like a 26inch Samsung (I live in Pal land). I also don't want to go for a fullHD screen because of the space it takes.
thanks...

A "TV" will always be better. But TV's are like apples and oranges.
A second Apple LCD + digital Cinema Desktop is the cheaper and "sort of" way to go.

Hey Gunleik, thanks for the quick response. I'm only thinking about a screen for color correction.. are you saying that I can color correct on an apple cinema display better than on a TV(LCD)? Isn't the apple screen a computer screen? If I wanted to buy a Samsung screen (26") 1366 x 768 would that be totally bad for CC? If so, are there any other cheaper solutions to the Apple screen that would be a good compromise? thanks

I'm putting my hard hat on here-;)
The Digital Cinema Desktop feature is sorta calibrated towards apple LCD's and emulate a TV preview. Question is: How are you planning to connect your Samsung Screen?
If you go out throgh a videocard (AJA/Decklink) I guess the Samsung will be a better bet, but if you're connecting via DVI - the Apple screen is (most likely) a much better idea. The Digital Cinema Desktop feature is for exactly this kind of "intermediate" workflow and seems - to me - to be pretty good calibrated towards the Apple LCDs. My Dell on the other hand - I wouldn't use that for this...

I was planning on going out DVI, what are these other links you are talking about? and are they expensive? And do I need the 23" apple display, or is the 20" inch ok?

For sd and 720 the 20" is good. If you really really need full rez the 23" is the only that handles 1080. Don't blow a SD image up to full screen on the 23", though... Or you may, but you'll see all the jaggies in another and much more unpleasant way than if you do it at 1:1 rez.

Ok,
got a cinema display...I got the 20" thinking that I don't really need to see HD. However the cinema display looks pretty much like my Macbook pro screen. Nice, but I thought I needed it to emulate a broadcast screen..which it does not seem o be doing in FCP...it seems to me that for video editing the tv would be closer. I'm a little disapointed and wondering if I should have tried a Led TV monitor instead..or is there another setting?

This may be a stupid question, but are the color charactoristics of HD and SD great enough that you should do the color in an SD sequence on an SD monitor?
I've found that the Video Monitor forum over at dvinfo.net (http://www.dvinfo.net/conf/forumdisplay.php?f=112) is a pretty solid resource for monitor Qs espeically about specific brands.

Are you monitoring through the Digital Cinema Desktop?
And...
Yes. It is a good idea to do final CC in delivery format.

I am in CC mode, using the display as a monitor. What about changing the preferences of the screen ? Are there any presets like Pal/Ntsc that give the screen contrasts more similar to a LCD TV?
Apple HD Cinema Displays are rated to do CC'ing with HD material.
If you have an HDTV screen, you can do DVI from your Mac directly to the screen.

I cannot beleive that they are rated to do CC...theres no way. There is nothing similar between the color on the apple screen and a TV. Or there is a setting I don't know about for adjusting the screen for CC?
