Hi everyone.
My name is Leo Fernandez. I am a student a Columbia College Hollywood. Me and my friend Tyler Poppe shot around a 6 minute short for our school and will be entering it into the DVX dramafest. It's entitled The Broadcast. The idea and titled were concieved in late August and the film was shot early november. It has a character called Eric and it explores the depths of human emotion and how it reacts when confronted with extreme pressure, panic, and fear. It stars the famous Kimko as the lead who, in my opinion, gives one of the best performances he has ever done. Me and my team are very excited about the dramafest and look forward to seeing everyone else's films.

thanks Lloyd. thanks Ben. That was one of my main concerns haha. After a full 12 hours of difficulties, i was just thinking.."Ben is going to kill me...and break my DVX..." haha but in the end it got up there.
it's going to be a great festival. Cheers AND THANKS FOR ALL THE SUPPORT!

Hello Everyone,
My name is Tyler Poppe. I am the co-director/co-producer with Leo Fernandez. I just wanted to drop and line and say hello to everyone. This is my first time on DVXuser, and this was my first shoot ever using a DVX 100. I am working right now on a banner and a poster for the Broadcast, but I dont not have photoshop so this has become a little harder than I expected; I am now using GIMP. The second problem is that I am also new to Final Cut Pro and Motion so I have not figured out how to take an .MOV file and make a picture out of it.
This was my first movie I've ever made, so I am really excited to debut it.
Well I hope to hear from other posters on their comments and thoughts.
Oh also I want to make a comment for Kimko.
Kimko:
Thank you so much for putting your trust in Leo and I. I was so happy you could join us and the performance along with the input you have given us along the way has been superb. I hope that we will be able to work on another project in the near future.
I am on the verge of Finalizing the DVD menu system and the cover art should be soon to follow. Again, thank you so much Kimko.

Very excited, but then again I'm always excited about this stuff... it's just so much fun to make movies and see the final product.
I just wanted to update some things.
Here is a poster of The Broadcast. Hope you like it.

Sorry for the double post.
In the Broadcast we used a DVX 100a ( I think A Leo will have to correct me).
We had 4 lights: 2 1K 1 650 and a 300(maybe 350).
For one of the scenes we used only a 60 watt bulb.
Well if anyone wants to know anything please ask. For now this is the questions I've seen on other threads so I thought I'd answer them on ours.
Also. How do you post a banner in your signature?

Hello everyone. I was just wondering what your thoughts were about our movie "The Broadcast"
Let me know what you think.

Tyler,
I thought it came out well. I liked the overly-dark atmosphere, especially in that cellar/shelter. I like the twist at the end, I didn't see that part coming and the story altogether was engaging. Kimko did a really good job w/ his part! I liked his performance.
I'm a little confused on some parts of the story, was the guy going crazy from the idea of the attack, or in general was he already on edge and this was the one event that sets him off?
Blaine

I thought Kimko did a good job acting here. His character was somewhere between the part he played for Ricki Rocket and Chad Callaghan. The other two actors didn't really register to me. I wished you had decided on a look and stuck with it as the changes pulled me out of the story. The story is what I had a problem with, though. I just didn't buy it. There was not enough information given about Kimko's character to make me believe he would kill his family. We've come a long way since Orson Welles caused panic with The War of the Worlds. In today's world, the story just didn't ring true.

Hello everyone thank you for your comments!! Leo and I will be responding to them soon, but I did want to make a quick comment before I have to run:
Leo and I came up with the idea actually based on the Orson Welles idea. We wanted to do the story, but figured it'd be to costly with props and what not to truly recreate and Orson Welles panic attack. As we threw back ideas back and forth we stumbled upon wikipedia's article on the Emergency Broadcast System. The article states:
To prevent inadvertent activations and abuse, a ten bell alarm (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ten_bell_alarm) would be transmitted by the AP and UPI wire services (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wire_service) along with a confirmation password during nationwide activations. Stations who subscribed to one of the wire services were not required to activate EBS if the teletype (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Teletype) was operating but did not have a confirmation.
Despite these safeguards, the system was accidentally activated at 9:33 AM EST on February 20, 1971. A system operator accidentally "played the wrong tape" during a test of the system. As a result, an EBS activation message authenticated with the codeword "HATEFULNESS" was sent through the entire system, ordering stations to shut down and broadcast the alert of a national emergency. A cancellation message was not sent until 10:00 AM EST. This false alarm demonstrated major flaws in the EBS system. Many stations had not received the alert but more importantly the vast majority of those that did ignored it. The only station in the country that shut down as mandated by FCC rules was WSNS-TV (Ch 44) in Chicago. The operations manager in charge refused to play the attack warning. Numerous investigations were launched but few changes were made to the EBS.
From this we took the idea and created a short story. Thank you for respones. Will reply soon to the comments

Great story so far, very compelling. Too dark , especially in the basement, can barely see their faces. Acting isn't spectacular, but not bad.
When she says go get the radio, that's not credible at all. One moment she's saying "What about you? come with us" the next moment she wants the radio? Doesn't make sense.
Don't like the music, it's very cliche. Doesn't say anything except "tension ahead..."
And it just doesn't make sense he'd kill his family before an explosion.
Overall I don't buy the premise of the film.

I think the problem with this one was definately in the script. It is just not believable at all whatsoever that he'd kill his family. It felt forced, like the whole script was just there to give you a moment of a man covered in blood screaming out in agony. I thought Kimko's performance was good until that moment. That was a little overacted.
I think the premise was strong, but overall the short just didn't ring true in anyway. Have you guys seen the The Day After?
i was waiting for three shots, didn't like the idea that he'd kill his family and save himself :oS
then you hear him set the gun to kill himself when he hears that it was a 'malfunction'. I was waiting for the shot throughout the credits at the end, but it never came.

Honestly we were never trying to imply that he saved himself at all. I dont think anyone ever could save himself. The reason we left it with out the shot was because it left such a droning effect.

Kimko threw a lot of passion into that part. I really think the dude has real charisma.
I dug the concept and premise, but I didn’t think it really worked. I just didn’t buy into this guy choosing to that decision so quickly. And since that was the central part of the script…
I give you props for attempting a period piece (I think you’re the only drama that did that) and you had some good moments in it.
Obrigado

well i watched it............i was in Charlotte N. Carolina with some of the dvx boys....uh what can i say? i wasn't going to say anything but after talking with Leo, what was the editting all about? you guys left out the part with her and i talking about offing themselves explaining why i would kill my family...... and why put all those credits in and leaving out parts of the story? wtf! it was chopped up and made the performance look stupid. there was a build up why i would be screaming.......who the @#$% edited this!? usaully when you edit something it makes the performance look better than it was....but somehow the editor made it worse! and jumping around from one scene to the other lost the momentum and looked like artsy crap! i know Leo got out voted to do the straight story what he envisioned so i'm not down on you, now you know why i don't do student films. oh man i'm sorry to blast but ....i just can't beleive this came out the way it did. i knew there were some foul ups on set, changing the script by the teacher who had no clue of the story....telling you to skip certain parts...umm maybe that's why he's teaching and not making films........

well what i wanted to convey with this character was, that he was a strick conventional ass when she was serving dinner (which someone shortened the scene) he didn't even give her a look never mind helping her. then when the kid wanted his tie off i begrudgingly took it off then folded it neatly, like i had done with the newspaper, trying to show the neat orderly way i was... having complete dominance over the family. but when the sh it hits the fan....i started to lose my self confidence....so i told the actress(Andy) to start taking control of the situation while you see my character gradually losing his persona. she ends up grabbing me by the face and tells me to get myself together and do what must be done without living with the agony of nuclear poisoning rotting our flesh away, she tells me to kill her and the son. i do it but i'm breaking down to a shell of a man.... well that's what i wanted to do for the story besides just a story about a computer malfunction. i wanted to see the woman with all the years of agonizing subserviants take control one last time whether it be shove it in his face or ending her lifetime of misery with him....well i guess the class of students didn't get that and cut out what led up to the killing spree.

OH BY THE WAY. DVXUSER guys thanks for the compliments on the acting but let's face it, it was terrible, that has got to be the worse peice of acting i've done! but like i said if it was edited correctly i thought it was going to be good. let it go let it go let it go................................................ .............................

Funnily enough i actually enjoyed this (and kimko's posts lol!)
I concur with others that the shooting of the family happened too fast and without adequate foreshadowing in the short, however that has now been cleared up by Kimko to have been due to unfortunate editing.
Kimko, regardless of the end result, i was impressed by your acting in the final scene. You gave it enough without it being over the top, thats hard to do but you did a fine job, congratulations on that.
I guess this goes to show that its better to make a short specifically for the fest rather than shoehorning 2 projects into one, or to enter as a non-competition entry.
Anyway, in all seriousness i DID enjoy the short. kind regards
