These were interviews that we had conducted for a documentary film, different lighting conditions and shot with DVX100a. We since moved on to an HVX200 and the results were so good that we decided to re-shoot the convenient interviews, but due to time and distance restraints it wasn't prudent for us to re-shoot all of them in which case we need to re-size the 480p-over60i to fit the 720p24 standard.
Here is the workflow:
1) Run through Cinema Tools and Rev. Telecine to 24p. removing the extra frames. (I'm not sure what the difference is between 24 and 23.98)
2) In QT, Export to 1270x720 I tried running through Compressor but results were not as good, resizing in FCP was the same, that's why I came to the conclusion that a direct export from QT from 480-720 looks best.
3) Bring into FCP and CC.
Results:
I tested 6 different interviews and only one of them I can say for sure we need to re-shoot. This was a talent that we did not use a fill light on. We lit him with a sort of shadowy look on one side. There seems to be some reddish blocky artifacts alongside his nose which is the worse place for artifacts because when someone is talking, the viewers eyes are looking at the talents eyes. The other five are a little soft compared to HD but perfectly acceptable considering the circumstances. Most people don't notice these things anyway, but with subtle flickering red blocks between the light and shadow of the nose, the viewer is using half the brain trying to figure out what's wrong with the shot, and taken out of the emotional/logical impact of what the talent is saying. I am going to try using something like Nattress chroma smoother and isolate the nose area and see if I can pull the red out, with my limited CC skills of course.
Moral:
If your starting out with SD (DV25)- and still entertaining silver screen dreams, lighting, lighting, lighting. The shadowy look ain't cuttin it.
