will my new macbook pro run final cut 5 that was designed to be used with the older chips as good as a new version of final cut?

or for that matter microsoft office 2004? final draft?

my point is will the new chips still outperform, even if they are running software that may not be optimized for them?

you need to use the Universal version of Final Cut Studio which is 5.1 and not 5.0...using 5.0 will be very VERY slow.

Office will be slower than on a PPC chip, but since it is not a very intense application you shouldn't notice too much of a difference.

Under the 4.8 version fix of rosetta non universal apps run MUCH better. After Effects Sma'OKES my G4.

Though - I must agree -- you REALLY need the universal app of FCStudio.

As mentioned in the previous post, the keywords you're looking for are Universal Binary. Apple's software will obviously have such releases. These are the ones you need to use for your Intel based Mac. As for other companies, you just have to do your research. Adobe, for example, does not have UB's yet as far as I know. So Photoshop, AE, etc., have to get run through Rosetta, so won't perform quite as good as they should. Photoshop though I've heard holds up okay. AE I'm not sure.

As mentioned, something like Office won't matter too much because its no where near as demanding as video editing related applications. That software and much else like it should be just fine working through Rosetta.

cheers.

no, you can't upgrade to 5.1 with a simple download...apple refers to it as a "crossgrade" and you are required to mail in your FCP discs and pay a small "crossgrade" fee (from 5.0 to 5.1 is $49). here is the info:

just found the crossgrade info as well. it also says you need to have your form and discs postmarked by december 20. not sure why there is a deadline to it,...but i'm going to send this in right away.

thanks for the help everyone!!
